I regret selling mine, but I needed the cash to help finance the 24-70mm, its an astounding lens, albeit prone to flare.

Was it worth the upgrade? I'm holding out for the 24-70, but the dang price keeps going up and up.... (D300 shooter) I'm torn because I need either a 17-35 or a 17-55 for the wide end as well. I imagine I'll have an FX body during the next 2 years, but not very soon.

For me, yes it was since I got an extra 4mm of wide on the D2X, and now the D700. However, the 16-85mm is a real jewel of a lens, and is 95% as sharp as the 24-70/28-70mm lenses.
