Opinions of this lens as a starter lens? I think the new one has VR.

Got one here used, highly recommended. You can find it <=$300.

16-35mm f4 VR II is $1260!! For that I'll tighten my belt (more) and go for the 14-24.

For me, I always shoot the 18-35mm at f/8-f/11, SHARP enough for me. VR is not necessary because 1) shutter of 1/50+ is more than plenty, 2) I use tripod a lot

Remember this is a full frame lens. Under DX, it is eqv. to 27-53. Not super wide but 28mm is good for general group and landscape shots. Secondly, this is not an AF-S lens, so it cannot be used on D40/60/3000 etc bodies.
