Nikon 50mm F/1.4G AF-S - 12-05-2008, 12:43 AM

Yo most remarkable dudes / dudettes, I picked up the new 50mm AF-S F/1.4G today....it is a fine lens. I do not have very many examples from it yet, so until I do please enjoy this B&W photo from inside the camera store. Taken wide open at F/1.4 ISO 400 (Nikon D700). The Bokeh is really nice and the coatings on the optics are top notch. There is hardly any CA with this lens. Here is a link to show the difference between the old 50mm & the new 50mm:

Precision actually had one in stock, or did you pre-order? And how is Ian? :-)

Hi Bill, I did pre-order the lens but a guy bought one yesterday that was an extra. They got 13 of them in but I am not sure how many people were waiting for their lens. Ian is doing fine and he is always fun to talk to.

Wow that's a noticeable difference in color/contrast in your link. I'm surprised at how much more resolved the tree trunk close up is- looks great!

Thanks for posting. I'm very interested in this lens as I am shooting some HS bball and the gym is very dark! The AFS will help a lot!

Is it really better than the "D" model?

I'm curious about that as well.

I just sold my f1.8 to buy the f1.4 and most stores carry the G with a $175 increase in price over the D. The thing I don't like is the new ones don't have the aperture ring so I can't use it on my old Nikon F1. If it is that much better then the D I don't have a problem spending the extra money, I just haven't seen many comparisons.

From everything i've read its not any better or worse than the D, it just doesnt have the ability to change aperture... and for that i think it should be cheaper than the D... but alas i guess it isnt cause its newer.

Huh? Of course it can change aperture on any modern SLR. It will also AF faster than the D models because it has the built-in silent wave motor.

I can't judge the optics or other performance, but I don't agree with your statement that it should be cheaper because it doesn't have a manual aperture ring. Of course, YMMV.

I just tested the G and the D yesterday...... just AWESOME!
Like it was said,
The big difference is paying more for the digital G, for me I did not care too much because you can't use that lens on a film camera.
That's if you decide to shoot film!
The Nikon 50 f/1.4 AF-D @ B&H just had a price drop from $369 to $329!
I just bought it yesterday for $369!

First off, the 'G' designation does NOT mean digital. It means that the aperture is controlled solely by the body and not manually with a ring.

Secondly, this lens WILL work with modern Nikon film bodies like all other 'G' lenses including the 70-200mm f/2.8G VR. I have used all my 'G' lenses on a F5 film camera with no issues. They are also compatible with both of the current Nikon Film bodies, the FM10 and F6.

Please refer to the Nikon specs page for more details on lens compatibility.

I was giving the wrong info from Nikon Customer service rep and a camera store.....

But this is what I did find... not all....

Auto Focus - Silent Wave (AF-S) is a type of focusing motor used in many of Nikon¿s AF-Nikkor lenses. The AF-S motor provides faster and quieter focusing. AF-S lenses also have an "A/M" mode selector which allows the user to switch from automatic to manual focus with almost no lag time.

Some older AF cameras are not fully compatible with the AF-S function. With these models, AF-S lenses will have to be focused manually. Incompatible models are: N60, N55, N8008/s, N6006, N5005, N4004 & N2020.

there have been a lot of feed back from people with body's D200 and up saying that the g is slower than the d because of the stronger motor.

I don't have one I have and love my 1.4 d, it works on every body i have. plus manual ap control for reversing etc..

And fwiw all of my "g" lenses work fine on my N75 film camera :), well accept for some bad vigenting on some dx lenses lol
