Bill, its also a great portrait lens as well on a D700 body. A little long on a D80/D300/D90 type body, but still very, very nice.

You'll love it. I've only had mine for around a month. It's great. Works well with the TC-14E, ok with the TC-20E, but I'd suggest skipping that one for the 1.4 or 1.7. I plan on getting the kenko tubes for it. I got the R1C1 macro flash kit too. Sweet combo. :)

I'm looking forward to getting the lens early next week. I'm moving in the direction of portraits with the 105mm as a couple of decades ago, my dad had a 105mm for his Contax RTS which I now own. Great shots back then.

Also going to be using the lens for when I photograph jewelry for my clients. I'll post some shots next week to see what everyone thinks.

I got my 105mm lens today! I need to start lifting weights, a very solid lens.

With all the crappy weather outside right now in Austin I've really been using this lens around the house from some product photography of a few things I've been trying to sell to some corals in my girlfriend's new saltwater tank... here are some examples...

Using the 105 Macro - 12-11-2009, 04:03 PM

I got this year to use in my mineral photography, but I have also found it very useful for capturing flowers (with and w/o insects), lizards in the garden, and the night blooming cactus on our porch. I don't have the VR version but since I use it on a tripod most of the time, it doesn't matter much. Here is a shot of the large night blooming cereus, taken with diffused flash.[IMG]
