I have been thinking of this lens to suppliment my 70-200mm as a lighter alternative for trips and such. It seems sharp enough, how does it work on the D700 though?

It's not in the same league as the 70-200VR (I have that too). It is fairly decent, though. It is FX compatible, although I've only used it on DX. I would imagine that corner sharpness isn't as good. It's quite small and light. Good compact travel lens for decent light. VR works well, doesn't focus as well as pro glass, certainly for birds in flight. I often carry it on a D80 for grab shots in my daily travels. When viewed at 100% shooting wide open at 300mm, optical flaws are visible. Otherwise it does pretty well.

This lense is an unbeatable value for what it is. It works great when there is adequate light and is relatively low in weight. The 70-300VR paired with the 16-85VR are probably the best variable aperture zooms available for a Nikon body. An excellent travel or landscape lense combo.

I just ordered one of these lenses, and it's great to see these shots. Thanks to all for sharing.

Here's a few from mine with the lens on my D50, feel very lucky picked the lens up at a pawn shop for 225.00. It's my first VR so i'm still getting used to it.

Nice, David! I thought I'd got the best price on mine @ $280! It's pretty good on full frame too. Thom Hogan likes it as well.
