Nikon 800mm f5.6 ED IF Nikkor

An oldie, but I am pretty excited to have it. It is taking some extra time getting geared up. I had to get a special tripod head...I settled on the Bogen 393...at about 1/3 the price of a Wimberly. It seemed to be ok...my tripod needed to be overhauled...removing the center column and engineering a solid support. I alos needed a way to transport it with wheels, so I found a bag that is big enough to fit it WHILE the camera is attached AND the lens hood is extend. Made some custom fitting foam...and it is nearly perfect...just needs better rough terrain wheels.

Anyway, here are a couple of shots...nothing spectacular...yet:

Is this an old manual focus lens? Where did you find it?

I wish they would come out with an AF-S VR version of this.

I don't. 2 Reasons. One, I couldn't afford it. Can you image how expensive it would be? Two, I bought this hoping it would hold it's value. If they come out with a new one, this will drop in value. ;)

I don't know about expensive, but can you imagine the uses for an 800mm f/5.6 lens? BIF photographers would be in nirvanna.

Just picked up a Sigma 1000mm f8 AF last week and am expecting the Bogen 393 in the mail soon. I'm looking forward to how this lens compares to Nikon primes? If it is 1/3 as good, I'll be happy.
