Selling on Craigslist & Scammers - 05-19-2009, 02:08 PM

Why is it that every time I post a camera / anything remotely expensive and shippable on craigslist I get dozens of emails from people who want me to ship it to Nigeria as a gift for their son / daughter??? Nigeria must have the world's highest ratio of stolen electronics per person..

Just my rant...

Is that a scam? I just sold a camera to a person and they asked me to ship it to Nigeria?

I would. I you don't, don't be surprised if they file a claim against you and have PayPal refund them them their money.

I would check your paypal account and make sure the money is actually in there. the scam usually works like this:

They'll agree to buy, then send you an email that looks like it came from paypal telling you that you've received a payment. the payment will usually include some crazy amount for shipping (like $150) and tell you that the money will be release when you send them the tracking number.

Check your paypal account.. if you don't see the payment there, it's a scam.. don't rely on the email they sent you, because it is probably fake.

Craigslist is America's flea market, bound to be more fleas than market some of the time. I bought a battery grip from a nice lady who listed it on Craigslist, almost bought a boat off a listing, too, before I came to my senses.

Well in my case the transaction never appeared in Paypal, so it was clearly a scam. maybe in your case it was real, maybe they were planning to file a claim, you never know..

I've learned to just deal locally when craigslist is involved.

Zebulus weren't you posting earlier about selling a D40x on craigslist for $400? that's another sign something's fishy.. getting more than the item is worth..

We've bought (and sold) a lot of really really good deals on craigslist.. but you're right, you have to filter through the crud to find the good stuff..

Yeah, I know. I guess that's how they bait you. They offered $450 for it. I cancelled it so I should be good now. There's no way they can get money out of me, right?

The camera is still in your hands and your money is still in your pocket, so I guess you're ok :)

Now that I've saved you from being scammed, you want to buy MY D40X? ;)

actually, if you're still interested in a different lens I'm also selling a 16-85mm vr..
