OMG - Some People (Rant - As if You Couldn't Tell That from the OMG) - 05-21-2009, 09:42 PM

So we went to the 8th grade awards presentation for my daughter's school this evening.. in the gym, so we had to climb bleachers and sit on seats designed for 8th grader butts... my knees have been giving me fits, so we had to find a fairly low seat (no rails, so no way I could try and climb high).

We end up on a row of people with ants in their pants.. sitting on an end so my wife can get up and leave if she needs to (the illness and all).. we ended up having to get up and down off our seats several times as people came and went from the row before starting... they finally decided to leave before the whole thing started, leaving a few yards of open bench.

Another family group comes up and asks if they can sit there.. no problem.. we get up AGAIN and step out so they can file in...

They proceed to take the empty places, our places, AND EVEN THE PROGRAMS WE'D LEFT SITTING THERE.

Standing there.. flabbergasted.. the people in the row behind started in on them.. jumping to our defense.. letting them know how rude and inconsiderate they were being to the people that had kindly let them get to those seats.. and that they needed to slide down farther and make room for us again. THEY WERE OFFENDED and gave us the cold shoulder and dirty looks through the whole program.

O. M. G. I want to come back as somebody special in my next life.

I had a similar night. My son had his last band concert tonight. It counted as four grades, along with mandatory after-school practices earlier in the week. They had to be there at 5:30 and the concert started at 6. We got there at 5:30 and I found a seat once I figured out where he was going to be. I could not believe the number of students that showed up after 6 and they are scrambling to get them seats for the concert AND the number of parents who showed up after the concert had started and immediately went down to the front trying to get a seat, but standing in front of everyone so that no one could see.

This was a middle school concert held at the high school. There were TONS of seats in the back. By God, if I was late, I would sit in the back so as not to disrupt everyone else. But, I guess not everyone thinks that way. Had a set of parents standing in front of me the last 15 minutes of a 30 minute concert.

Rant over and I, too, want to come back as someone special in my next life.

My grandpa and I were talking about this today. . . NO ONE has any consideration for anyone these days.

I know I probably sound like my granddad when I say "the older I get, the more selfish the world seems"
These days, most people have the "you owe me" mentality and treat everyone as such. and it has very little to do with finance or position because I've seen it across all incomes

Agree 100%, and I haven't even gotten out of my twenties. Just look at behavior on the roads.

Well, it is nice to know that there is a group of fine, kind, and considerate people in this group. The actions described are atrocious. I hope that you all were able to enjoy at least some of the event(s) attended.

I have the following tag on my home email account, "God, Country, Self". Meaning that one should think of and act in benefit of in that order. It seems that many today prefer "Self, Self, Self".

To put a slight 180 spin, I had a HS teenage athlete come up to me last night at the game and actually "thanked" me for being there taking pictures of the playoff game. That was a "first" for me in the 5-6 years I've been covering the HS sports. There still are some decent folks out there teaching their kids the right kind of behaviors. I know this was a bad situation for you Brad, but I think there are more good people than jerks like you encountered. Unfortunately, the jerks are just more obvious.

Had the same thing this week with the older grandson's end of year, high school band concert... Got there early, found our seats, and then spent the whole concert trying to see around both kids and parents who seemed to feel the need to get up and move somewhere else all through the 1 1/4 hour concert. Some of them did it several times and I won't even get into the multiple crying or screaming babies thing at the same concert.
Went to the youngest's choir concert at church Wednesday night and not only had to give the evil eye and "shush" several sets of people who apparently decided that the gathering wasn't for the little ones to show off but rather, the meeting was called so they could gossip among themselves the whole time.

My wife says in another six months or so, she won't be able to take me anywhere because I'll always be going off on some self centered clown who believes the world revolves around him/her. Works for me...
I would invoke the old saying about "raised by wolves" but wolves have better manners than much of the population does nowadays.

I just read a quick little thing in the Houston Chronicle online about "Paparazzi Parents" that reminded me of this.

A slighty different type of rude behavior:
My daughter went to Six Flags for a school outing. She and her teenaged friends were in line to get food/drink, and were chatting/giggling, like teenaged girls do. A woman behind them in line said; "DO YOU MIND....I'M ON THE PHONE...". One of my daughters friends said: "Yes we do mind, this is an amusement park, not a library!!".

I've been known to turn to the people making the noise and say (read carefully) " It's really rude of this orchestra to be playing, while you are talking !"

When I used to work retail, there would always be people coming up to pay at the register blabbering on their phone, looking annoyed when you tried to conduct your business with them. To this day I won't talk on my cell in a retail establishment unless it's VERY important; and then I will excuse myself and go outside.

What's sad to me is that so many people don't even realize they're being rude, much less care about anyone else. Not a good sign.

I'd like the see the big neighborhood full of barns where all of these people were raised.

The Dallas Morning News carried a story a few years back where a clerk bypassed the person on the phone and took care of the next person in line. The person on the phone got all irate about being skipped. The young clerk was not able to grab the caller's attention so waited on the next one in line paying attention.

If I remember correctly, I don't think he hung up the phone to complain.
