Talking Its Here! Its Here!! - 05-25-2009, 05:53 AM

I sold enough chickens last week to afford a new lens, (yes actual 'bock bock' egg laying chickens) and I found an INCREDIBLE deal on Amazon. I ordered it on Thursday and just checked my tracking on it, and it was processed through the Ft. Worth office at 12:44 this morning! I SO hope it gets here tomorrow, in good condition. It was shipped via USPS.

Oh... its nothing special either, its the Zuiko 40-150mm for my Oly. Not a big deal, but since I've never owned more than one lens for my 35mm, having a CHOICE is going to be EXTRA FUN!

That's awesome, congrats!

That's a chicken? I thought it was some new configuration of dog, like a poodlepeekanese or something...

Mostly ornamental, although some gamebird breeders used them to hatch out quail and pheasants. They have purple/black skin and they are fairly scrawny birds.

Whoa. I never knew such funky lookin chickens existed! How do they taste? Are they tastier than run-o-the-mill chickes I buy from H-E-B?

I've been told that they taste like regular chicken. However they are very scrawny birds, only about a couple pounds. They also have purple/black pigmented skin and bones. You can see the color of their skin in the pictures above of the ones with the naked necks. They are sometimes served as 'delicasies' in high end restaraunts such as those in LA and NY, but usually unheard of in the US. However they are very popular in Asian culture as I understand it. It is believed that the black meat and bones have healing properties for ailments such as arthritis etc. If I am not mistaken they call it 'black chicken soup.' This breed of chicken is originally from China, and Marco Polo wrote about them in the records of his travels in 1500. The 'furriness' is caused by a lack of cartilage 'hooks' called Barbicels usually found between each hair on the shaft of a feather. Without these 'hooks' to hold the hairs together and give the feather its shape, it is left to flow freely causing the look of 'fur' instead.

I've seen some of these chickens go for as high as $1200 for a single bird, to $2100 for a breeding pair. Personally, I was able to sell a few for enough to pay for my new Oly! I was going to sell out recently, but since I have a few more pieces of equipment to acquire, I think I'll keep them around for a little longer. LOL

Speaking of, just checked the tracking on my lens, and its due for delivery THIS MORNING!! WOOWHOOOOO!
