Houston broadband/cable/satellite/etc - 05-27-2009, 03:40 PM

Okay now that I am moving to Houston, I am trying to find a decent internet/cable/phone/etc provider. I DO NOT want Comcast, I just heard to many bad things, I would like FIOS but I do not think that is offered here in Houston.

Any recommendations on who you guys are satisfied with or not satisfied with and why. I prefer providers (internet) that do not cap my downloads and uploads.

edit..... The part of town I will be is in Bellaire, between bellaire HS and the Galleria....

Depends on which part of town, if you live in lake jackson, fios is available, in houston proper, att dsl/uverse, comcrapstic, verizon dsl, and I believe the satellite providers are some of your options. Comcast bandwidth is great to have, but their CS sucks balls. I would ask your neighbors as to what they have as you meet them.

actaully, we've had comcast almost forever, no issues here whatsoever. Several neighbors have expeimented with satellite, dish, etc, all are back to comcast now.

we're in NW Harris cty, so it may differ.

Can't comment about Comcast but I've had so much trouble with AT&T I just had to find a better provider (I work from home so I need a stable and reliable connection).

Checkout www.oplink.net their CS is top rate and their prices are very competitive, and when in doubt you can always get customer feedback from http://www.dslreports.com/

Hope that helps.

You want to avoid Comcast at all costs.

AT&T Uverse is a great option.

I would LOVE AT&T u-verse... it's not available in our area though.

I have Pro DSL, and Direct TV...

I've had Comcast since they took over for Time/Warner. The only problem I had was with a modem and they switched it out without any hassle. I've had no issues. I don't think there is one perfect provider. I've heard complaints about all of them.

I think u-verse can do 18 down, if you want to pay for it. The upload is limited though.

yeah, UVerse is 18 down and only 1.5 up. I think you may only have the option of ATT and /or Comcast in Bellaire

in my 77042, when I didnt have issues in April of this year, my speeds were in the range of 15-20 down and 2-2.5 up. I believe you'll be near the comcast storefront, though that may not mean jack, you could have similar or better service.
