Eco friendly - 05-27-2009, 07:11 PM

So I'm in REI the other day and I see an "eco friendly" water bottle. It's made of stainless steel. They said it saved energy... like combining ores and melting them at extremely high temperature and pressure to form the stock, followed by whatever manufacturing process is involved with turning out a stainless steel water bottle isn't intensive??? Nice marketing. Too bad it's male bovine fecal matter...

Maybe it's made of organic stainless steel.

My idea of "eco friendly" is going out in the woods, finding a nice big tree and sit under it reading poetry. While burning a pile of old truck tires.

Actually it's the BPA fear that's going on about the water bottles. Supposedly if you reuse them, over and over again - it causes leeching of the BPA toxins.

It's way overblown... as usual... and so 'stainless steel' is considered more environmentally friendly (no toxins released after years of reuse, which to me, is the REAL environmentally friendly issue - the years of reuse)

Actually some of the medical studies on potential impacts of BPA were pretty interesting. Had to say if it is overblown or not, but there are BPA free plastics and even ones that are not petrolium based, so there are other options than steel. In fact, I have a bio-based plastic water bottle sitting on my desk now.

Another consideration is that the stainless steel bottle has the *potential* to outlast *many* plastic bottles. The length of viable use and not needing a newly manufactured replacement can also be stretched into "eco-friendly."
