Suggestions for Learning Video - 05-29-2009, 09:23 PM

It appears that the organization I work for will be bringing video production in house within the next year, which means that I'll need to start learning video over the next year. I know so little about it that it would be best to start from zero.

Does anyone have suggestions for books, classes (preferably in the D/FW area) or online resources that will get me started?

Thanks.

What will your ppl be producing?

If yall guys have a group of ppl, each ppl should be an expert in a niche. In video production, you mainly have director, creator, camera man, lighting/grip, and sound.

Out of those niche, what do you want to do?

There's a lot of things involved when it comes to video production, and it's not a one-man job like photography.

Just pick any topic and discuss.

As of right now, the plans are to produce vlogs, testimonials, the occasional interview and event coverage.

The angle we'll probably be taking is more of the "platypus" style, with the still shooter also doing video with lighting and sound. (The Dallas Morning News has some great examples of this type of work).

do yall guys know what camera yall guys be shooting w/? is there a preferred brand?

For your style, I believe a sony ex-3 is well-suited for both handheld and ENG style.

Trey,

I hear bugmenot.com helps with the whole signing up issue. So I've been told.

Thanks for the input. I'll check out the Sony. I've also been looking at the mid-range Canons. The good thing is that I think they're willing to invest in decent equipment.

Thanks again.

Two words... David Leeson. Google him, he's in Dallas. Pulitzer Prize winner for video reporting in Iraq. he teaches video, too.

If you want to hire any of the DMN video/photo guys/gals to give you a primer or as a consultant, I can hook you up. Just let me know. A few of them were laid off due to budget issues up there and are now doing video freelance.

Jason,

Oh yes...I've been familiar with Mr. Leeson's work for years and have followed his crossover to video. One of the first things I did was track down his article on SportShooter about getting started with video.

I think I've found a possibility on training, but I may get with you down the road on the DMN contacts.

Thanks.
