So I've been trying my hand at growing some things on my apartment balcony this summer. To be quite honest I have a black thumb and I have no idea what I'm doing - but I'm going to try anyway.

My issue is that I'm growing two kinds of tomatoes, but one of them is looking a bit droopy. The leaves seem green and soft, but they curl lightly inwards on themselves. The whole plant currently staked and tied up, but not in a tomato cage - so there are no horizontal supports. Is it normal for tomato branches to hang so low? I don't have the greatest pictures right now. I'll take some new ones later to better show how the branches are looking.

When I first potted it:

About 5-6 days later:

Also the other green plant in there is some parsley. I read that they can work well planted together to battle disease and junk. Plus parsley is tasty and I cook with it a lot. As you can see it's growing pretty well!

Some info on my watering habits - I read that containers dry out very quickly and it gets pretty hot here (as you all know) so I've been watering every morning. I tend to water until it flows out of the bottom of the pot. I have some concerns that I water too much but I really don't know how to tell because I'm a gardening noob. ;_;

I can't tell too much from the images, but it looks like it is getting too much water.

Beth, Tomatoes limbs will droop when they have fruit on them but at this stage yours should not be drooping. It is hard to tell from your photos but I am thinking maybe a little too much water and not enough sun. They love hot weather, give them at least 6 hours of sun. Don't keep them wet, water only when the soil feels dry to the touch.

Thanks, you two - I'm sort of feeling like it might be over watering as well, but I'm not totally sure since I don't know how to tell the difference between any of the ailments a tomato plant might suffer from, haha.

I took a couple more pictures:

The two tomato plants are in slightly different locations so I may move the droopy one over a bit so that it gets more sun. It's near a pillar that may be blocking some rays during certain points of the day. My apartment balcony faces west though so it should get a good bit of afternoon sun.

Might just be a characteristic unique to that variety. Tomatoes like light. Cool and damp (rainy) not so good. Heat is good , but too hot and they won't set fruit (over 80 at night). When it gets hot and they get larger (root bound in pots) you won't be able to give them enough water. Because they are in pots watering will also tend to leach the nutrients from the soil. Particularly nitrogen (water soluble). Feeding a little very often is better than a lot every once in a while. Have fun fighting the squirrels and birds over them. :)
