Suprised to see this set up at a studio - 06-01-2009, 09:39 PM

I am in Keystone S.D. (right outside of Mt Rushmore) and I am walking down the street and see one of these "get your pic in an old tyme costume" photo parlors and to my amazement they are using Norman lights with Large Beauty dishes to light their set! (Didn't see what digital camera they were using-had it stuck in an old tyme looking large format style box with belows to give the customer the look of being shot by an old style camera).

Talked to one of the girls and they said that the studio had burned down a few years back (may have been the restraunt that they are attached too) and when they rebuilt it they did it right and fixed mistakes that they had made the first time.

The set that they had was nice also but I was suprised/impressed to see the light set up that they were using.

It's hard to get good flash powder nowadays !!

They light it with expensive strobe lights, shoot with a digital camera, process on a high speed computer, and try to make it look old .......

sounds about right.

They need John Coffer there.

And you can get flash powder still and some photographers still use it.

Why are you surprised? Professionals should use professional gear. Would you rather take your car to a mechanic that used the tools from the kit in the trunk or the guy that has a chest full of Snap-On gear?

What I find more amazing are the professional photographers who choose to use no-name brand lights because "light is light"...

Usually you don't see beauty dishes being used at a Tourist Photo Shop just some lower quality light system. (check out the next theme parks photo "studio" set ups.)

Geez... If you are impressed by Norman packs, I'd hate to see what you do around my Profoto and Speedotron gear?!?!? And it seems like beauty dishes wouldn't give you the old-time look of flash powder. Seems too soft and pretty.

No I was impressed that that style of business was using good pro equipment not the brand. Usually those places, even busy ones, go on the cheap to an extent. (heck 99% of the people getting their pictures taken in them don't care what is being used just the product being put out.)

I understand what you mean. 90% of those places use crap and don't care about the product that they put out. It is surprising and refreshing to hear of a place that actually is trying to put out a quality product.
