I don't know how photo journalists can do what they do. It was all I could do to even bring myself to snap this pic with my cell phone :(

It is a pool of blood with what appears to be a wadded up T-shirt where someone apparently used it to try and stop some bleeding.

According to the news, he died at Ben Taub. The picture doesn't really capture the drama of the scene. Shattered plastic and debris was all over the place. The driver's side of the SUV looked like battering ram hit it. Massive pool of blood, a river of it all over the asphalt. I think the driver of the car was hurt too. That bike had to be travelling well in excess of 80 MPH.

"The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, crashed into the driver's side of a Lexus SUV traveling through the intersection, throwing him from the bike, authorities said."

As a rider myself, I feel very strongly about wearing gear. While I don't know what caused his death, you never know if at least a helmet could have helped.

RIP. I feel for the family and hope they get through this ok.

While I feel sorry for him and his family... I feel just as bad for the innocent driver of the other car that may or may not have had a family aboard. They had to witness and be a part of such a tragic event that could have been prevented (i.e., not speeding, running light and possibly being assisted by helmet).

No matter if it was that drivers fault or not, they are going to be forever effected by that event.

Very sad.

This was posted on Houston-Imports as well.

I think the story was that the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet and ran a red light and into the side of the Lexus SUV.

At least that's what I heard.

R.I.P.

Sorry to hear about this motorcyclist's fate. I haven't had a cycle in years, but cannot understand why some folks do not wear helmets. Not sure if it would have helped in this case, but it couldn't have hurt.

I was in Houston this past Wednesday and was traveling north on Hwy 59 when I was passed by a guy on a bike doing about 20 mph over the speed limit while zig zagging and passing everyone he could. He wasn't wearing a helmet, but had one secured on the back of his cycle. I always enjoyed off-road cycling and think it must be safer than navigating rush-hour traffic in Houston on a two-wheeler.

My first thought, based on the positioning of the bike and the blood (looked red to me) was that the motorcyclist was dead and he was not wearing a helmet. There are few surprises anymore. Only sadness. Bet this was a kid, not yet 25. Very sad.

This is very true. You think extra hard about your composition, shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

Then it still haunts you later.
