Seller Beware! - 06-08-2009, 08:49 AM

Wow, almost got scammed using Craigslist to sale my camera and equipement. I posted it and within an hour got 3 responses. One kept asking for my paypal account to send payment. Gae her my paypal e-mail. Tells me she sent money for shipping also. Which I found odd because NOTHING was discussed, and I did not want to have to ship to someone if I could avoid it.

So, an hour later I get an email from service@paypal.com - it stated that I have the amount waiting to be sent to my paypal account pending sending them a tracking number showing I had sent the item "this is to protect both the buyer and seller". It struck me as odd. So I check out this service@paypal.com email account and it turns out that it is the "display name" of the email address and it was really paypalserviceteams@mail2pal.com . Again I was feeling weird about this transaction so I contacted the person and stated my concern and that I would not be sending the product, to please cancel the payment.

So I check online and it turns out that this is a Scam ran out of Nigeria. I take another look at the email, and the ship to address was NIGERIA.

Wasting my time like that. SHEESH

CL is a "cash only" transaction IMO.

then again I won't touch paypal for anything so if someone had asked me for a paypal I would've told them no.

never follow links in emails. If you get something from a bank or paypal or anything else that actually seems legit that you have business with type in the url yourself. Don't get scammed because you're lazy.

+1....

I recently bought a Wien Safe Sync from a guy in Carrollton. I had the option to paypal him, and even though he was legit, very nice, and proactive with communication, I still made arrangments to pick the item up with cash.

Yep, Craigslist is just a modern form of the local newspaper classifieds, so face to face with cash in hand is the only way I do it.

I had that happen recently although not with Craigslist and realizing it was a scam kept them on the hook thinking I'd send the items for over 2 weeks before they got exasperated and gave up.

It was fun.

Craiglist is worse than the newspaper classifieds ... with the paper, you have to at least pay something to print the ad. CL is free and shows it!
