Best thing we ever did was cancel our home phone service. Now if we could only get the door-to-door solicitors to skip our house.

Tack one of those "No Solicitors" signs above your door.

(This advice is more helpful than the "Switch to Firefox" advice you gave me. )

No problem with solicitors calling after getting on the Do Not Call list. However, I would LOVE to know how to get debt collectors looking for someone I do not know to stop calling - after 3 1/2 years! They don't seem to care that they have the wrong number and they call EVERY day. Do they get paid by the phone call? Anyone know an Ashley Farris?

I haven't used Safari ever since I couldn't get an upgrade for it on my very old iMac, so yeah, I wasn't any help at all!

I'm not sure the solicitors know what the word "solicitor" means. Plus, we haven't found a sign that we like. Something that says "welcome" and "go away, salespeople" at the same time.

I just use my caller ID. If I don't recognize the number, I let the machine pick up and then I promptly erase. It doesn't stop them from calling me about that damn warranty expiration, but I don't have to talk to them. Works like a charm as far as I'm concerned.

I've actually turned my land line phones off and told everyone I know to call my cell if they want to talk to me. According to my CID, it's working well.

The do not call list is good, buy you have to sign up every couple if years.

I agree about the debt collectors with incorrect info. I keep getting ones and the only info they have correct is a first and last name. One actually accused me of lying about my social security number. He didn't have my address correct, nor any address I'd ever lived at.

Since applying for my tax id number I've been pounded by unsolicited calls for dell computers, pos services, ADT security etc. That is getting annoying because they're calling my cell phone.

about warranty sales: answer the phone, let them go thru a bit of their routine, then cut them off and ask them to add you to the no call list. Since you have done business with them, you cannot get them on the list BEFORE they call you.

But in most cases, once they get ahold of you and you turn them down, then ask them to put you on their no call list, the calls should cease eventually if not immediately. They only continue to call people that they couldn't contact! And your answering machine doesn't count.

These folks work from a particular list, many are simply college students trying to earn a few bucks, and legally they don't fit in the blanket "Do not call list" (since you bought the product = you did business with them).

Trust me, answer the phone ONCE, tell them no, and you will get off their list. If you never answer it, they'll never stop.......yes, my son had this for a job in college. These were his instructions.

but bottomline: get caller ID and use it. If you don't recognize it, don't answer it. It isn't rocket science. You're paying for caller ID, use it. If it really is someone you know and they really need to get to you, they will leave a message.

This has been our M.O. for several years. Works fine.

For debt collectors, ask them (whether it is a wrong number or not) if this constitutes "dunning". It's a word they are deathly afraid of. We had one many years ago calling for a former neighbor; they called at least once a week but once I mentioned dunning, no more calls period. zip. nada. zilch.

I don't think so. They are just doing their job. I used to hate when they called and would mess with them often. It was only after I had done some telemarketing myself that changed my attitude towards the people that are calling.

If you aren't interested in what they are selling just tell them no and hang up...

When they intrude their little belligerent useless hineys, uninvited into my space and waste my time with their useless drivel and do NOT understand a simple "no" they are worse than pond scum and should get a "real" and productive job.
