Green fees at Pebble Beach - 06-10-2009, 05:32 PM

What golfer doesn't think it would be cool to play at Pebble Beach? We got invited to go out to Carmel this November, so I checked today on what the green fees would be. I've played in Hawaii, so I expected it to be on the high end of the resort course fees, but ..........................$495 to play a round of golf???????????????? Really???????????????? Has anyone ever played it?

You'd have to be a golfer. It's one of the "golf mecca" locations to play. I've never played there but green fees in the early 90's were $275 when expensive courses were $35 - $50.

KenW - that's why a cart is important. No sense in wasting a good walk. :-D

Already got the 100 f/2.8 macro, so that's not a factor, although, put another way, it's a pair of really great shoes.

I fully expected pricey - but not that pricey. Plus, my husband found out what it cost. There are some things that are better left unknown.

I am a golfer, played on my high school team and took it back up several years ago. I would love to play, but..............geesh, even I don't know that I can justify this!

I love golf as well, and I have wasted more money on much less memorable things than playing at pebble beach. If I had the 500 dollars, I would probably be all over it, but there are quite a few other places that are a lot higher up on my list of playing (TPC Sawgrass, Pinehurst No. 7, St Andrews, and Augusta National to name a few)

Honestly, there are a few courses out near Myrtle Beach that 10 years ago cost $150 and you've probably never heard of them, so 500 seems like a real bargain to play on an icon!

Kent, I totally understand.....it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

If you ever get to Lana'i, both the Challenge at Manele Bay and the Experience at Koele are well worth playing. I actually liked the Koele course better - up in the hills, unbelieveably cool (I needed a windbreaker it was so cool), wild turkeys roaming the course and the signature hole is a 440-ft. drop par 3 that was breath-taking in the fog.

For me that would run about 4.95 a stroke.....
I'd want to shoot 200 so I could get the per stroke rate down
and get my monies worth.

Given the course, that might not be hard for me!

Kent, my law school roommate briefly dated Bob Dedmon, Jr., CEO of Club Corp a/k/a owner of Pinehurst No. 7. Wish I'd been better friends with him.

That will average out to about $75 an hour. It is a great course, but it is full of people who have never played the game.

If you want to play 8/10th of Pebble Beach, try the Pacific Grove Muni course that is adjacent to 17 mile drive. Often called the "poor man's Pebble Beach". I also enjoyed playing Spanish Bay and Spyglass. Just know if you play "the glass", bring plenty of balls for the front 9. The iceplant eats golf balls.

Another treat are the twin courses Bayonet and Black Horse on what used to be the Fort Ord Army base. I think they're owned by the Palmer group now. No where near the cost of Pebble, but quite nice and playable.

I've played nearly every course in the area since I lived about an hour from Monterey most of my adult life. Send me a PM if you want more suggestions.

I lived in the Monterey area in the 80s. I never played Pebble Beach because I was just learning the game and could not justify the $200 expense. Besides, they would have had to have a grounds team follow me to clean up all of my divots. My friends use to laugh that I would hit the turf further than than the ball. I played Bayonet and Black Horse on Ft. Ord and really loved the courses. It would not be uncommon to meet people like Clint Eastwood on the course laughing or cussing their game. I just looked on the web to see if the courses were still open since Ft. Ord closed. A private company has the control of the courses now and you will pay at least $160 for a morning round. Just to make a point, I would pay less than $20 for 18 holes. They are great courses and definitely an alternative to Pebble Beach. One word of advice, stay out of the ice plants! They are used for soil erosion conservation and will stain clothes and golf equipment. Believe me, I spent many hours cleaning clubs and clothes after my famous hooks and slices kept me in the plants.

Thanks for the tips - will check out Bayonet and Black Horse. I have played the Del Monte course before. I also looked at Spyglass - it's another option. I should have more info on the trip soon.

Played it and Spyglass. Worth it in my mind for the bragging rights. I like Spy better.
