I would convert if I was into it, got to be cheaper than IR film.

I thought there might have been a techinical aspect to it, kinda like thermal imaging.

Our own Bruce Burton shoots mostly IR now.

It can be quite beautiful if done right.

Chris...this is not quite thermal...it just produces some different images...and gives you a new look on the same subjects.....

Here are some examples that I have taken...

OK Sorry I posted so many pictures...got carried away....

But I hope this illustrates some of the ways IR can be used to give you a fresh look on different subjects...

Thats really neat! I've seen Bruces' photos of the Japanese Gardens before, as well as some others, but they all seemed to have the same tonal qualities. Browns were more red, and greens looked white. It seemed kinda limited at first glance, but you've obviously proven otherwise with the above. I really like the one of the birds on the beach. So much definition!

IR can be a cult like Macro and Glamour photography.
We used to shoot with IR film and it was always a crap shoot as to what you might get.
Todays cameras are designed to filter out the IR. take those filters away ( IR conversion) and you can get some very interesting and different results.

I just do it because I like the effect. I have a few of my IR shots printed on metallic paper and framed.

Chris...I would love to say the birds were a shot I was going for...It was actually by accident that I took that...

Here is one other shot...that I love...this is in Cinco Ranch..I saw this tree with a bunch of Black-Birds...reminds me of the old Alfred-Hitchock movie The Birds...

It almost looks like a big negative... and not negative in like an "it sucks" kinda way, but an actual big film negative.

Chris you can get an IR filter and not convert your camera if it is something you want to try. It is harder but you can do it.

Then there's always Alien Skin's Exposure with it's IR film stock conversions.
