Installed the update this afternoon and been playing with it since. The OS does seems a little peppier to me. Overall I'm slightly disappointed with the update. I say this because I feel I have "downgraded" from my previous Jailbroken 2.2.1 OS.
I already miss many of my Jailbroken apps and the ability to customize. I'll go through some of the new updates included in the new3.0 OS and compare them to what I already was using on the JB 2.2.1 OS.
- Cut, Copy & Paste - the JB OS offered an app to do this.
- OS 3.0 offered a landscape keyboard. MEH! JB OS offered this keyboard app and another app to enable landscape capabilities. This was one of my favorites!
- OS 3.0 WILL offer MMS. This was not an important feature to me but it was something I looked into and found the JB OS offered SwirlyMMS. In addition the JB OS also offer biteSMS. This app BLOWS AWAY the lame standard sms app included in the iPhone.
- OS 3.0 offers Voice Memos. Nothing special about this app. The iTunes Store already offered QuickVoice Recorder (Free) and QuickVoice Pro Recorder w/ Voice2Text ($.99).
- Internet Tethering - could be done with the JB OS.
- Stereo Bluetooth - don't use it.
- Shake to Shuffle - there so many cool JB OS apps that do more.
Video recording. NOPE! Not unless you buy the new 3GS or......JB your iPhone. There are two good apps,
Video Recorder 3g and
Cycorder.
Let's not forget UI customization! Using the app Winterboard you can literally change the look of anything on the iPhone and customize it till your hearts content. I've spent countless hours messing around making my iPhone "pretty".
Have you ever wanted the option to transfer files to and from the iPhone? If so, then there is an easy free way to do so by using SSH and WinSCP.
I'm sure many iPhone users will be happy with the 3.0 OS update. The iPhone is an amazing tool by itself. But it has the potential to be something great with all the 3rd party apps available. I was really looking forward to going "legit" and using an un-jailbroken iPhone. But the sad fact is I will more than likely go back.
