iPhone 3G 3.0 Software Update - 06-17-2009, 06:10 PM

Downloading and installing as we speak (20 minutes to to download...then probably 30 to install)

Anyone else braving the upgrade immediately or already done it?

230MB!!!

When did phone operating systems approach the size of older full blown desktop Linux installations?

Ken

literally just got mine up and running as i type this. cant wait to check it out.

I did have a problem for a couple of hours after actually downloading the software before it would actually install it. Some server problem i guess.

Good luck...

Finished... 30 minutes total, on Verizon USB Dataplan...not too shabby...

Just sent my first text in landscape mode...ahhh, how nice it is to go back to 2005 when the Pocket PC Phones first started allowing this!

Why do I enjoy using a device that aside from the screen, takes technological steps backward in many, many ways?

Guess it's because I can do the iTunes thing with it and my iPod and listen to my music without carrying two devices.

iPhone 3Gs ... you'll be waiting until you offer more than just more capacity and battery life...

TxManx added 6 Minutes and 45 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

Oh...and the Motorokr S9-HD paired flawlessly and the BT A2DP stereo is streaming beautifully... oh, I'm ALMOST as excited as I was when I first got the darn thing...

Downloaded OK, but it's taking forever to back up. It's only been about 60 days since my last backup, and I have not added alot of data (mp3, videos, etc).

But already it's been "backing up Brian's IPhone" for about 45 minutes. Actually looks stalled, but with an apple product on a PC, sometimes you can't tell.

Love it! Everything seems snappier! I wonder if all the Snow Leopard type of changes have had some trickle down with smaller more efficient code...

SMS messaging is much faster now. IMAP mail also seems improved!

This one is a home run so far... I've been running it since about 1:00PM.

I installed it too but synced with itune and the download was MAYBE 5 minutes. It was the connecting to the apple activation server that too awhile(about 30 minutes of trying). lol.

Landscape texting/mail is SO much easier and better. Copy and paste is cool too. Now if only AT&T would allow MMS, it would be great.... hint hint for anyone that works at AT&T..... o:)

I'm up and running, but having trouble updating some apps. It tells me I need to agree to some new iTunes t/a stuff, and then I do. But then the downloads never start.
It keeps telling me I have 3 updates but I cant update then because I keep repeating the first step.

once you do the first step (agreeing to t/c), you have to go back into the update screen and try and update again. at least that's what i had to do

I did that three times and it never worked.
Then I synced back up with iTunes on the computer and went to "Check for Available Downloads" and then they updated.
I'm sure I'm just doing it wrong.

Now we're limited to downloading apps at 10MB on 3g, more requires WiFi. We're paying for unlimited data, but they're limiting how much data we can use in such situations. Wtf?

Installed the update this afternoon and been playing with it since. The OS does seems a little peppier to me. Overall I'm slightly disappointed with the update. I say this because I feel I have "downgraded" from my previous Jailbroken 2.2.1 OS.

I already miss many of my Jailbroken apps and the ability to customize. I'll go through some of the new updates included in the new3.0 OS and compare them to what I already was using on the JB 2.2.1 OS.
  • Cut, Copy & Paste - the JB OS offered an app to do this.
  • OS 3.0 offered a landscape keyboard. MEH! JB OS offered this keyboard app and another app to enable landscape capabilities. This was one of my favorites!
  • OS 3.0 WILL offer MMS. This was not an important feature to me but it was something I looked into and found the JB OS offered SwirlyMMS. In addition the JB OS also offer biteSMS. This app BLOWS AWAY the lame standard sms app included in the iPhone.
  • OS 3.0 offers Voice Memos. Nothing special about this app. The iTunes Store already offered QuickVoice Recorder (Free) and QuickVoice Pro Recorder w/ Voice2Text ($.99).
  • Internet Tethering - could be done with the JB OS.
  • Stereo Bluetooth - don't use it.
  • Shake to Shuffle - there so many cool JB OS apps that do more.

Video recording. NOPE! Not unless you buy the new 3GS or......JB your iPhone. There are two good apps, Video Recorder 3g and Cycorder.

Let's not forget UI customization! Using the app Winterboard you can literally change the look of anything on the iPhone and customize it till your hearts content. I've spent countless hours messing around making my iPhone "pretty".

Have you ever wanted the option to transfer files to and from the iPhone? If so, then there is an easy free way to do so by using SSH and WinSCP.

I'm sure many iPhone users will be happy with the 3.0 OS update. The iPhone is an amazing tool by itself. But it has the potential to be something great with all the 3rd party apps available. I was really looking forward to going "legit" and using an un-jailbroken iPhone. But the sad fact is I will more than likely go back.

im sure I will jailbreak my 3Gs eventually if for nothing other than winterboard. With the faster processor it will be nice to have themes and not worry about slowing everything down.

I saw an ad on the Apple website and looked at the YouTube page. I wondered how I could get video quality like that on 3G.
