Kodachrome Officially Dead! - 06-22-2009, 07:25 AM

I just got official notice that Kodak will cease to make K64 on 12/31/10. This will make it still available on its 75th anniversary.

There is one lab left that processes it (in Kansas) and dropping it off at Wal Mart works as they send it there.

If you have never tried K64, you still can, but it just isn't like the old days and K25, or Kodachrome II. This stuff lasts forever, unlike other slide films. As I understand it, it was actually a black & white positive with dyes added in processing. I know that is a gross oversimplification but it explains why Kodachrome never fades.

Sometime progress sucks!

Cool Bummer. Bummer. Bummer. - 06-22-2009, 07:28 AM

Official from whom?

Dwayne's, "the place in Kansas", is still open and selling fresh Kodachrome. Several online sources sell the film.

OK, it's official. The prices on ebay will skyrocket just like Polaroid Type 55.

Bummer.

Digital can not "do" Kodachrome. Bummer.

It gives us those nice, bright colors.
Gives us the greens of summer.
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yea.

I got a Nikon camera.
I love to take a photograph.
So Momma don't take my Kodachrome away.

It's a damn shame that the new kids on the block with their zeros & ones contraptions have zero appreciation for history.

When the zero and one files are toast, Kodachrome slides will still look as good as new.

Y'all don't know what you're loosing.

And no, we can't "help you fix that."

There is one thing that's for certain: change. Even in photography. It's inevitable. I realize the film purists have a hard time with that fact. However, being middle-age like I am, I have an appreciation for both film and digital. There's application for both. True, the digital generation has no idea what's being lost. But according to the article, it isn't just digital that's caused the demise of Kodachrome; today's film shooters aren't using it much either and instead are opting for the newer Kodak films. The ROI on Kodachrome manufacturing just isn't there anymore.

The daughter of a friend of mine is going to be required to learn film and darkroom processes while majoring in photography in college. At least she'll get a taste of analog by learning to shoot, expose, develop, and print before being allowed to submit digital work.

Guess that after the one lab stops processing it the ERA will be dead.

(no home/business darkroom will be able to step in either).

Kodachrome was the Platinum standard and then Ektachrome was the Gold standard while Velvia tried to step in and did set a new base for certain styles of photography and then the Agfa line didn't quite reach the upper echelon (in my opinion) we may soon have none of these in the 35mm format size. (this may force people who want to use film to go up to MF and sheet film).

And she'll be a better photographer for it.

Most people don't realize there is no digital equivelent for Large format film. No digital sensor today or on the horizon can do what 8x10 film can.

Show me any digital process that can match an 8x10 platinum contact print.

I actually when shooting slides, I preferred Agfachrome to Kodachrome. I always thought Agfachrome had more subtle color than Kodachrome particulary in the reds...
