People want too much for their crap! - 06-22-2009, 11:36 AM

Ive been looking for a good second body. I really want the ruggedness of a nikon D1H, and I believe I can find one in my price range.

I talked to a lady earlier today who wanted $350 for her D1! Her D1!!!

The D1 came out in 1999, that makes it 10 years old! Come on people, why would I spend that much for a camera that old! I offered her $150 and she said that was out of the question, and said my D50 would be a second body to the D1. Pfft.

Opinions anyone? I realize they paid $4000 for it 10 years ago, but that's the gamble you take when you spend crazy money on digital bodies, they just dont hold their value.

Digital bodies are not investments, regardless of your definition of investment..... They are best used exhaustively, then demoted to secondary/backup use, then given to charity when you can't fit anymore backup bodies in the bag.

And ultimately, like the 1s and 0s they created, recycled into whatever...

People continue to say that Leica hardware is expensive. Nonsense.

The last Canon 20D I saw here went for a tad over $200. Weren't they over $1,200 originally?

Meanwhile, you can buy a Leica M3 or M2 or M5 for under $1k and use it for a year. If you love it, great. If you hate it, sell it for what you paid for it. You got to use a nice camera for free.

You can even get good usable M6's with internal metering for under 1K.

Double stroke M3's are real bargins right now also.

Sounds like you need to look elsewhere. She sounded pretty firm.
Be sure and let us know when you find that $150 camera. :-)

+1. This is so true, and people really need to take a lesson from this. When im shopping for a camera im looking out for myself, and could care less how much you paid for it 10 years ago, that's not my problem.

The fact is, technology depreciates with value. Ive always been one to buy good older equipment. Buy last years model, or even 10 years ago's model if the price is right.

So no, I will not pay $350 for a 10 year old 2MP camera.

Maybe not. Depends. If the seller finds a buyer at that price it was a fair market price by definition.

Have you checked completed sales at ebay?

If the seller was listing on craigslist, all bets are off. Folks selling on craigslist sometimes have a wildly inflated view of their selling prices.

Why not shop for a "free" Leica?

Yeah, I'd rather just hold on to my old gear, or give it to a family member or friend, then sell it to a random stranger for pennies on the dollar, out of spite.

Yeah, your a real commedian.

@Crackhead, yeah I kinda get the feeling that's what is taking place, and I cant say I blame them honestly. I would rather hang onto my gear if I paid that much for it.

Also the title of this thread is kinda funny, because if it's crap then why would you want it at any price?

People tend to overvalue their own property and interests, and conversely they also tend to undervalue the property and interests of others.

this is really a pretty good way to establish the real market value. The overpriced stuff rots in place, the underpriced bids up until supply-vs-demand is at equilibrium.
