Houston to Shreveport photo op suggestions - 06-23-2009, 09:34 AM

My wife and I will be going up to Springhill, LA (about an hour North of Shreveport), and I was wondering if anyone had any photo op ideas for the trip.
I went up there last November, and went by the only know International Border marker inside the United States. I don't have any photos of it online (that I found with a quick look), but I do have photos from a couple of the nearby towns, Logansport & Keatchie, LA.
Would love to shoot something new (or old actually) on the trip to or from. Or if there's something worth shooting in the Springhill, LA or SW Arkansas area, that would be cool too.

Thanks,
Jerry

Logansport is the only thing I can remember. I've made the trip once or twice. Jefferson, TX if it's not too far out of the way.

It looks like Jefferson is about 2 hours from Springhill, it might make a nice little day trip while I'm up there. Saw another little town, Vivian, LA that might be nice to shoot, as well as a nice looking (from Google Earth) bridge and a spillway.

Is Bon Temps, Louisiana anywhere en route? If so, it would be neat if you got some pics of Sookie Stackhouse or maybe even Bill Compton (but you can only find him out and about at night). Be sure to swing my Merlotte's where Sookie works.

I have loaded paper in Springhill b4, the only thing I really remember about the town is that its a railway center. I believe its along the line used by the old Cotton Belt railwaay, you might find some rail related ops around there

Keatchie has some old buildings that make for some good photos. They also have the first women's that was in the area, now it's just a big ol empty building but make for some interesting photos. Moringsport has good good ops also and one is Caddo Lake for some good nature photos. Are you coming up hwy59 or what? It's hard to know what would be out of your way without knowing your route.

John, usually if I'm just trying to get there, I go up 59 then cut across 79 (I think) to Flying J @ I-20. But if I'm not in a hurry, I can take a different route. I'm in Huffman, and sometimes head East to Beaumont, then up 96 through Jasper.

In Marshall on Hwy 59 & Hwy 80, Old Harrison County Courthouse, T&P Railroad depot and musiem. On East Houston, Several blocks east of the courthouse is Sam Houston elementry school. Quite rundown now but holds lots of memories for me.

Courthouse is West of Hwy 59 at the intersection of Washiington and Houston. Depot is at the end of North Washington. Just north of Hwy 80 on your way to the depot, you will find the old Dr. Pepper bottling plant and the Marshall news Messanger. There several fine old homes scattered throughout the city, also

Well, on the way up to Springhill I took a scenic route through Natchitoches, LA. I started out getting a few shots of the cemetary in the median between the North & Southbound lanes of Hwy 59 just North of Splendora, TX. I shot a few barns along the way, some of the old buildings in Natchitoches, as well as a lot of the tombstones in the American Cemetary in Natchitoches. Also got some shots of an old caboose in Gibsland, LA. Was planning on getting some shots of the Bonnie & Clyde Ambush Marker in that area, but somehow missed it. I must have been looking off the wrong way when we passed it, or maybe I didn't even pass it since some of the roads were under construction, and had detours.
Anyway, photos from the trip up there are located HERE if you'd like to see them.

On the way back, we went through Plain Dealing, LA, to Jefferson, TX then South trhough Marshall, Center, and San Augistine. Those photos can be viewed HERE if you're interested.

Feedback always welcome.

Even the Shreveport/Bossier City skyline at night would be good to shoot.

If you like taking photos of airplanes, Barksdale Air Force Patch is in Bossier City. It is the home of the Eight Air Force Museum, which has one of the finest static military aircraft displays I've ever seen. The indoor exhibits are good too, but I go to see the planes. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. As you probably know, the weather there can be similar to Houston, and the static display is fairly extensive, so there is a lot of walking involved.

BAFB is also the home of the Second Bomb Wing (B-52s). I was there on a Fourth of July weekend, so they weren't flying, but you might catch them practicing touch and goes. Awesome!

Yeah, the old bridge and some areas downtown are cool too.

Brian,
If you're into Old Abandoned buildings, check out the Caddo Parish Prison while you're in the area. I didn't get a chance last time I was up that way, but it's on my list of photo ops that my wife will complain about while she sits in the car. :)
