My Big Break? - 06-24-2009, 09:27 AM

I work for a large construction outfit here in houston, and I found myself having a conversation with the marketing director yesterday.

basically, we were talking about who does their photography and I mentioned that I take pictures, and that I know photoshop as well.

She asked to see my portfolio!!!!

Im having a book printed by Blurb and will take it to her when I get it in!

She said if she likes my work they will use me to take images in the field. Is it too early to envision one day being the company photographer?

Yeah, im excited. This may one day call for a camera upgrade!

Nikon D5000 & 17-55 2.8, heck to the yes!

Umm, no actually NOT fixed. This is quoted from Scott Kelby HIMSELF from his site:

It was like ISO 400 on my D300. I was just amazed!!!!

So yeah, no D300 for me, thank you!

For architectural photography, a 4x5 view camera with a 90mm or 110mm will yield unbeatable images. Get Norman McGraths book on architectural photography. Steve Simmons or similar on using a view camera should help also. If you're looking at a Sinar, contact them. They have some of the finest publications around that will answer any questions.

Well, I was half being a smartass in my initial post. That said...

I just thought if you were thinking of shooting professionally, you might want a camera that has a more professional body than that of the D40 and with better build, more functional buttons and a focus system that wasn't AFS only. I wouldn't want to go through the menu system to choose things like AF-S, AF-C and AF-A modes, AF-area modes, WB, etc.
I don't know what you are shooting but do you really need to shoot that high of an iso for your company? Can't use a tripod and slower shutterspeeds?
Personally, I'd rather use my old D200 for commercial work than a D5000.

Okay, why has this become about the gear? This is about the opportunity to shoot professionally and get paid a salary to do so!

I just ordered my book from blurb, hopefully that will be impressive enough.

Congrats! I'd love it if MY company paid ME to do the photography for them.... not that they NEED much... lol...

But... I gotta agree with Dennis.... the D5000 limits your lenses... same as the D40 did... no focus motor on the body... must be in the lenses.... so you can't use some of the older ones.... *wahhh*

while the initial investment for the 300 might be higher than the 5000, down the line the lenses will be cheaper for you ;). Plus you'll already be in a "ProSumer" body that's going to make you a lot happier.

That said, I work for a concrete company and do some stuff for our "personal" use all the time.

You're going to need more than this in order to be a "professional." I'm just sayin'. (I had to learn this the hard way.)

It wouldn't be the interwebs if a thread actually stayed on track.

Anyhoo, congrats on the possible gig and let us know how it pans out.
I'm also interested in hearing about how this book turns out.

Thank you, I will

Yeah, Im also very interested to see how this book turns out as well. Its the one Smugmug reccomended and I gotta say they were pretty cheap. I put in 18 images, and I got a soft cover on it, cost me a little over $20 total, which isnt bad. I just have to wait a week for them to print and ship it. I still saved money though I think as opposed to having these printed at Ritz on high quality 8x10's and then buying a book to put them in.

FYI, here is a review on the company I ordered the book through. They seem to be pretty descent.

That is an awesome opportunity!

A professional has to worry about gear, but let's cross that bridge later. If you get the gig, you might consider a tilt-shift lens, which lets you correct perspectives in-camera so that straight lines will look straight. But if you will also be shooting people at work and those types of shots, it's not a must right away.
