It doesn't suck!!!! - 06-24-2009, 12:45 PM

Our vacuum cleaner started making a 'whining' noise.... and it got kind of loud. It still worked... you just hated using it cause it was so freaking annoying loud...

So my husband decided he'd fix it.

He took it out into the garage....and proceeded to take it apart to find out why it was all of a sudden so loud....

He found something that was chipped he told me....... and with beaming pride... came in to ask me to come out to the garage....

It was carnage....

If it came apart.... it was apart.... There are things that he took apart... that I don't think needed to be taken apart...for no other reason than he COULD....

All that remained was the actual motor part of my vacuum cleaner.... which he promptly turned on with the 2 wires still attached to the rocker switch.....and it still made that same annoying noise.... without some of the reverb of course....

We just need a new motor for it!!!

I think I paid less than $50 for it.... he spent a couple hours on it....and we know it needs a motor... for something that is sold at Walmart....

I'm trying to decide if I should go buy the same vacuum and let him take the motor out of the new one.... or just buy the same vaccum and tell him I fixed it while he was gone.... lol...

So... I'm searching CL for a vacuum cleaner.... before I go buy a new one at Walmart.... lol...

Marriage is a lot like a tornado.

In the beginning there's a lot of blowing* and sucking**

But in the end

You just end up losing your house.

I think love is like a tornado. Marriage is what happens after, when you stand around looking at each other, saying how it sounded just like a freight train flying over the house.

Maybe with the money you saved not buying Cutco Knives (!) you could invest in a slightly better vac. Ours were going out every couple of years, but we upgraded just slightly to the $200-$300 range. Had a Hoover Savvy that sucked pretty well, but then the power switch got twitchy ... a common problem with that one apparently. Now we have a Bissell Healthy Home, and it at least cleans really, really well. It's a multi-cyclonic like a Dyson with a slightly sturdier build. We'll see if it will survive our tornadoes!

Ken's wife here....

I feel your pain. It's hard when you have these husbands that "know" they can fix anything. Let me tell you my story about Ken...

January of 2008....yes 2008...he decided we needed to remodel our master bathroom because of tiles leaking in the shower. I mean he gutted the whole room....dry wall...shower...sink...toilet. The only thing left was the pipes and studs and window. WELL....a year and a half later I am still waiting. He finally put in the shower base and put in new drywall so we are getting there.

My birthday is in December and with any luck I may be able to take a shower in my master bathroom by then

I love the guy to pieces to I try not to complain too much but my friends all think I am crazy for letting it go this long before hiring a studly handman to finish the job. I guess I treasure our marriage more than a second bathroom.

Good luck with the vacuum.

Donna Snyder aka....Ken's boss

Dyson doesn't suck on carpet, they only suck on bare floors!
I would buy the new
Hoover Platinum Collection Lightweight Bagged Upright/Canister Combo
or the
Platinum Collection Cyclonic Bagless Upright

I love them both, the Bagless has this cool EDF which stands for Electronic Dirt Finder, which has a sensor that show RED for Dirty and GREEN for Cleaan!

AWESOME vacuums and better than Dyson!

Interesting my Dyson sucks good on Carpet. When looking for new carpet there were some that said DO NOT USE DYSON. The it is too strong and would not work with that type of carpet. AND it does bare floors too.

My problem is that I really can fix almost anything. No brag, just fact. I've rewired houses, installed and fixed sprinkler systems, fixed AC units in cars and houses, garage door openers that won't, toasters that overtoast, ice makers that make either glaciers or chilled water, computers, recalcitrant sliding glass doors, dripping faucets, broken hinges, water heaters, toilet wax rings/flush valves, etc, etc etc...you name it, I've made a mostly successful stab at fixing it.

My motto: "Heck, it's already broke......"

Cut the hubby some slack. Initiative is hard to come by these days and a guy that can figure out how to at least get some of these things apart, much less back together is a few notches above the average. He's a keeper. Fixing things is a primal need, like nurturing babies is for some women. Or nagging. He won't always be able to fix it, but hey, it was already broke. (abnormal noise = broke; Man Law 487.1a)

btw, forget the Dyson. After a while they no long stay together. Clever but terribly short-sighted design. Horribly overpriced. You're paying for his accent. Yes, I've fixed Hoovers, Electrolux, and even an ancient Oreck. The only Dyson I attempted to fix was really broke: plastic parts had totally snapped off and were lost to eternity. Dumpster fodder. (and boy was the neighbor pissed...).

The thing I ever did was by an Oreck. They are only $250 and they run like nothing I've seen besides those ridiculously priced Kirby and Rainbows. The commercial Orecks are only $200. Highly recommend them. I am so done with cheap vaccum's!!!

A vacuum... a motor, a belt, a brush and a bag/canister. That's about it. My $70 Wal-mart vac does the job. (Of course, you haven't seen my house. Yeah, you need a little dirt around.) :)
