Do you stop??? - 06-25-2009, 02:39 PM

So I ran up to Wally World to exchange my Olympus memory card with one for the new camera, and on the way home I get flagged down on a neighborhood street.

It wasn't far from my house, and there was a hispanic woman on the side of the road waving at me. She was a heavier woman, and obviously very hot, and I figured she needed a jump, or help pushing a car out of the roadway or something. WRONG! She wanted me to bring her to another apartment complex.

I explained to her that I wasn't going that far, but she begged. I usually dont do these sorts of things for my own safety, but it is obviously too hot and dangerous outside, I didn't get a 'gut' feeling of danger from her, so I told her I would bring her up the street a little ways until my turn off.

She begged me to bring her to this apartment complex, and after a block or two I decided to bring her all the way because it wasn't that far to begin with. I told her that I would bring her all the way, but she would have to find a ride home. She then asked me to WAIT OUTSIDE FOR HER TO GET BACK! I told her that I couldnt', and that I had helped her this far, she'd have to find a ride home. I told her that the bus runs just down the block from her, which it does, and she responded that she didn't have any money. I asked her what she was going to do and she said she was checking on her kids who were at daycare. Now my immediate thought was, "your kids are at daycare, but you can't afford 50 cents to ride the bus a few blocks?" But I didn't say anything.

In any event, I dropped her off, she begged me to stay, I told her I had helped her already and at least she didn't have to walk in the heat, and then I was on my way.

What would you have done?

Well we live on the East Side of Fort Worth, which is gang infested. After I got going down the road a little, I thought to myself "what if she's going pick up drugs?"

Sorry... I did my good deed for the day. She got where she was going without heat exhaustion.

Chris, it was very graceful of you to offer to help and go beyond the minimum.

You did more than I would have. It's kind of sad that we can't feel comfortable helping other people out, but too much weird and dangerous stuff happens. I'm also a 24 year-old woman and feel that I'm more at risk than a man might be.

Yes, this is the only conclusion a reasonable person can draw from the data presented: overweight, poor Hispanic women are drug addicts in most cases.

Brilliant.

Brilliant.

Well considering the neighborhood, and her mismatched "story" it was highly likely.

Although I do get your point about the generalization. It was not my intent, I guess I could have just said 'woman.' I apologize.

I get your point there, but I felt this assumption was more based on the strange behavior and desperation she seemed to be showing. Does the average person ask a complete stranger for a ride and then ask that same person to wait for her?

It is a shame that we have to wonder if people who ask for our help have other motives. There was a time (and maybe another place) where someone in need never had to ask; others just helped them automatically. Some of that attitude still exists in small towns (esp. in West Texas), where the distance between trouble and help is often too far to overcome alone. And it can crop up in times of extreme disaster ... house fires, hurricanes and the like.

What would I have done? I'm not sure. Sadly, it's too easy to say "no" even when I want to help somebody.

I've been in Law Enforcement for over 14 years now. All you have to do is turn on the evening news to see what our world has, and continues to deteriorate into. And even more sad is the fact that they only can share the absolute worse of the worst in their short 30 minutes of air time. The crime across EVERY major city was atrocious even before the economy's decline. I would NEVER recommend offering assitance these days unless you have other adults with you to offer YOU help in case that problem arises.

I'm such a racist.

Next time I will remember to ignore the part of the story where she waived down a random stranger in a passing vehicle to take her to a "daycare" at an apartment complex. Because everyone knows that's what normal members of society do.

Don't imply that I'm a racist, just go ahead and call me one flat out. At least that's less chicken**** than your response.

Her story may not have been probable, but it was possible. There was a story on the news a few years back about a baby that died in an apartment. A young woman was running a "daycare" out of her apartment and one of the babies died in her care.

Poor people can't afford an expensive daycare. The woman could have her kids with a neighbor who doesn't have/can't afford a phone. Her story might be legit. However, you won't know for sure...

She could've been working with a team to jump you, or setting up a bigger scam to get money from you, or buying drugs (as others have mentioned).
