Dirt Car Races near Houston - 06-27-2009, 02:42 PM

About 25 years ago my friends Dad would take us out to this dirt car race track to watch cars race on an oval dirt track. I have searched but can't find anything. My wife is laid up in bed with strep and my kids have 2 days worth of energy bundled up so I thought I would take them to see this. Anyone know what the name of is of this track?

There is Gator Speedway in Willis, TX which is north of Conroe on 45 North. Gator is a 1/4 sandy clay high banked track with agressive racing. There is Houston Raceway Park in Baytown that is by far the nicest facility in town. Asphalted pits for drivers, complete concrete walkways and concrete stands, great open flame burgers, decent restroom facilities and is right next to the dragstrip. HRP is a 3/8 mile gumbo clay high banked track. Very fast.

Battleground has been closed (for the most part) for the last 6 or 7 years with no racing there at all. There is also a track I used to race at called 105 speedway on Fostoria Road and 105 (near I-45), but I'm not certain if they still are open.

Most of these tracks run a spec late model class, a modified class, a limited modified class and some versions of a bomber or street stock class. These tracks have info online - Google away!

Glad to see someone wanting to head to the track, even if I haven't driven since 2002! Have fun.

Houston Raceway has a dirt track oval and is located in Baytown.

I don't know if it's still running but Hilltop raceway in Waller had karts and motorcycle racing.

I kinda got my start in photography shooting at a dirt track back in IN. I used to hand the winner the flag, let him do his victory lap then grab a shot of him with the flag when he got back. I actually shot these with a Yashica 124g with a potato masher Braun flash mounted to and L bracket with hose clamps... ahhh the good old days Tri-state Speedway, Haubstadt, IN summer 1978

There is a dirt track right outside of Alvin on 35 towards Angleton. I've shot pictures there before. Its a small town atmosphere.
