You should tip the person who helps you with your baggage when you travel. When your luggage is late arriving because of miss handling by the airline, should you tip the person delivering your bags to your home?

Well, its not his fault that the baggage is late. He may have worked his hiney off to get the baggage to you as quickly as possible.

Should a waitress be denied a gratuity because the restaurant was slow to seat you?

I don't know...I always send my checked luggage via UPS!

Seriously though, I think a tip, whether in a restaurant or skycap or anything else, should be based on the service you receive. I would say that if you get your bags in an exceptionally timely manner then a tip would be warranted. The airline should be able to tell you what flight number and what time your bags arrived at your destination. If your bags arrived at the local airport and it takes forever to get them, then no tip. If they get your bags right to you in a very short amount of time, then a tip might be appropriate.

That's my take on it. I usually try to tip relatively generously if the service is good, but I'm not afraid to leave a very small tip to try and get a message across if the service is bad.

I wish more people made their earning based on their tips.

Seriously.

The DMV lady would get a whole freaking lot nicer...
So would the guy behind the counter at the store I stopped by....

think about what you do.... if you in ANY regard have to deal with outside people in your company... would you earn alot in tips, or would they take money away from you? ;-)

What really makes me mad is the pizza places charging a delivery charge. Pizza hut and Dominos, your business is built around delivery for the majority of your customers... why are you charging to deliver??

That then puts me in a bad spot. Why should I have to pay a delivery charge and then tip the delivery driver? I'm paying twice! But why should the delivery driver suffer for stupid corporate policy? But you can't send a message to them if you tip the driver! ARGH!

Constant companion recently flew AA to Grand Junction, Co.
checked bag was not on flight.

AA delivered the bag that evening to Marble, Co , a three hour drive away.

That is a poor comparison. Waitstaff usually make the minimum of 2.13 an hour + tips and a delivery man is hourly/salary based and not dependent on tips.

Why? Because it costs more to deliver it to you. To bring you a pizza, that means that they have to have an additional employee to make the delivery, buy bags to put the pies in so that by the time they get to your house they're not cold, buy signs for the dude's car so that when he pulls up into your driveway you don't shoot at him (I had that happen to me. Twice, and in really affluent neighborhoods no less), and finally they have to pay mileage to the drivers in addition to their salary.

But what has happened in the last few years is that the pizza places started to add a delivery charge to your order because they felt that paying the few cents of mileage was taking too much of a cut from their bottom lines. They charge up to a few bucks in delivery fees even though the actual mileage they'll pay the driver is only a few cents. The delivery fees that pizza places started charging DO NOT go to the drivers.

Oh and always tip the pizza guy in cash cause you can't fill up your gas tank with the tips left on credit card receipts.

Also, never give your credit card number over the phone to a 20 sumthin pot-head at a pizza place who has nothing but time and a credit card number, your address, phone number etc. But you already knew that right?

No, she should not. However, if the service is poor AFTER I've been seated you can bet that the tip will suffer. I've been known to leave no tip at all if the wait staff does not take care of me. Granted, I take into account how busy the restaurant is, the number of wait staff on duty, etc. However, if the place is empty and my food is luke warm because the waitress is flirting with another customer, or is goofing off with some of her co-workers, I will not tip AND I bring it to the attention of the manager.

Customer service has gone down the toilet these days. Pet peeve of mine is to go through an entire transaction and have the person behind the counter not say single word to me. This happens at Wal Mart all the time. No greeting..... check out my purchase, take my money, hand me a receipt, and not say a single thing the entire time.

I could go on.

the problem with tips in america is the people that should be earning them expect them, and those paying them think it is rude not to tip.

i would argue that tips in some cases do elevate a person's job performance, but in the other create an entitlement attitude. which makes it a wash.

would i tip the guy/gal who brings me my bag lost by the airline, no. do i tip the pizza guy/gal when the place tells me it will be to me in 45 minutes and 1.5 hrs later i still don't have a pizza, no (and I tell them why). have i tipped a mcdonald's drive thru worker $5 who was cheerful and helpful, yes (it was a pleasant surprise and change of pace at the location we frequented). do i stiff waiters and waitresses if my water glass goes empty and i am dying of thirst, yes. I even usually let the person waiting on me know that if they want to pull their tip out of the fire, they should keep my water glass full.

my attitude plays a big role in how i tip, if i'm miserable, i'll let them know with my wallet. regardless of who is to blame for my misery.

They started charging more because they could. They do not pay the driver more. They only do it as an additional income and that is the problem I have with it. If they want to charge extra for delivery then some of that needs to go to the driver. If I place a delivery order at a place that primarily deals in delivery, I should NOT have to pay extra for their normal service.

As far as only giving the driver cash, he gets whatever I give him and if that isn't good enough, let me know and I will scratch it out and put $0.00. I always tip decent, but when people start wanting only cash or whatever, then it's their loss. If you don't have enough money to get through the shift then you have more problems than my $3 tip will help.

At a recent meal in an upscale restaurant in Dallas ( life is too short to live in Dallas ) the server was a complete putz. She admitted she was new, which is OK, but she was completely untrained and way over her head.
We eventually had to speak to the manager....

In this case, I left a very small tip. If I had left nothing, they might have thought I was just a no-tipper or had forgotten.

I wanted to make sure they knew I was "shorting" the tip because of bad service.

I am a waiter and if you stiff me because of a glass of water, then you should just keep going to mcdonalds and give them your measly $5. Our entire income comes from tips because all of our hourly ($2.15) goes to taxes. IF I make ANYTHING on a paycheck, it'd be $50 in a month. Id hate to think that I can't pay my electric bill because I had too many people in my section who happened to drink water too quickly. You aren't the only person I am waiting on.

Sorry to everyone, but this is a really sensitive subject for me.

To anyone who wants to know: a good tip these days is 20%. If the waiter did a decent job, but nothing to extraordinary.. 15% is ok. If the person did terrible but didn't give any attitude, don't be afraid to give 10% but not any less than that. But having an empty glass for a minute or two does not give you the right to stiff me. All restaurants are customer service oriented, so just ask a waiter passing by for some more water... they will be glad to help you out. Also, please notice when you share one meal with your loved one, try not to give less than $4... Trust me, waiters have the best memories when it comes to people that come in and tip well and treat the waiter well. If you tip well, you WILL get even better service next time.
