Discovering Hope: Faces of the Holocaust - 07-01-2009, 09:07 PM

A talented photographer I had the pleasure of going to school with, Eli Rubel, has undertaken a massive personal project. I won't go into to much detail as it is all on the projects website, but it is a truly inspiring project that he has been putting, what seems, 100% of his time and effort into.

The project is the start to an incredible archive showcasing the portraits of Holocaust survivors. He has already on course for an exhibition at the LA Museum of the Holocaust in 2010.

All the details can be found on the projects website.

Fantastic! Just like the generation that saved them, there are fewer and fewer of them every day. The time for such a project is now.

The link works fine in the original post. The website just takes a bit of time to appear. I will tell him he needs to work on that.

I am a little curious.... reading his website his proposal says "I -we- the descendants of European Jews, survived the Holocaust....." Does this mean that he will not be representing any of the other millions of non-Jews who were slaughtered in the same concentration camps? For example, the gypsies, physically disabled people, Polish nationals, Romani, Soviet civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, gay men, and political and religious opponents. These people deserve to be remembered as well!

I am pretty sure he is talking about his particular family and has nothing to do with who he intends to capture.

Thanks, Daniel, the link you provided works but it goes to white and then is a long time before the page loads. I tried the link Bryant had but still it does not work for me.

Last year and the year before we had a group from Arizona come to Goodfellow and make presentations. The year before I got to video tape Dr. Whalen's presentation and the presentations of two suvivors. Remarkable!

At one time I found it very hard to believe that man could be so vile to his fellow man.

When I was a kid survivors and those who got out from behind the Iron Curtain would come to our church. My dad, and others, would help these folks get settled in, find homes and jobs. They would come to the house and talk with dad. I got to listen to the horror stories and run beer for them. One would think that things would change for the better.

I think that as long as man populates this planet we'll have terrible times like those of the Holacaust.
