I have just follow the Guidelines.

They are pretty strict - we had my husband's done at one place and they rejected them because there was a slight glare on his glasses. It's pretty easy to just get the photo done where you apply and that way you know it complies with what they want. Certain Post Offices can handle the photo/applications, in addition to the passport office at the District Clerk's office.

I took mine yesterday and then found a program online, a freebie, that crops it in the correct places. I just hope they accept it. Do they tell you right away if it wont fly?

Are you renewing by mail or getting new ones where you have to appear in person? We had to get our last ones in person, because our old passports got, um, washed. Don't stick your's in the back pocket of your jeans, forget and then wash them because they don't come out of the wash in usable form and you'll have to replace them. That was an expensive load of laundry, since we had just renewed them the prior year and had 9 more years before they expired. Anyway, I digress...if you are going in person, they should tell you right away if they think they will be rejected, which is what they did in our case, so we reshot his on the spot. If you are renewing by mail, I guess it could take awhile to know.

You might want to call before you go. Sometime they have certain times that they do passport photos.
