I haven't seen all the paparazzi gear in detail, but I imagine they are using canon/nikon flashes with battery quantum-style packs? Is this info wrong? If so, power reduction would remain the same, since the battery pack only affect recycle time and number of flashes - not actual flash output/power.

Who on here regularly uses their high speed sync function?
I do use it on occasion, and it works fine. If you are going to be shooting at f/4 ISO 400 (or any other array of settings), it will have more then enough power from 10-15 feet away. And yes, the battery packs do not affect the power of the flash, but they can pop them at full power and not have to worry about it.

well, if you can get f4 iso 400 from 10 feet away, I guess that will be just fine. Obviously 5.6 or f8 would be a little better for depth of field, but f4 is more than acceptable.

Of course, we still haven't touched on the fact that a paparazzi would have little use for 1/4000 sec shutter speed outside of a dark nightclub You mind as well just shoot the subject in a black hole. This technique might be better for the daytime shots.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see advances in our gear, maybe within a few years, that allow us to shoot regular full-power flash shots at any shutter speed.

You do not need to even get close to 1/4000th of a second to get past an optical sensor that has to be used below 1/125th.

And with daytime shots, you are going to have such a low ISO/small apature that the device would be useless.

And as far as shooting them in a dark night club..have you seen the qaulity of some of those photos...not sure it would be an issue

I was just meaning that you wouldn't use the top end shutter speed to take a pic at night... I wasn't really equating it to out-shooting that anti-paparazzi device. I've kind of diverted this topic away from the device on accident, as we discuss the merits of high speed sync in general. Sorry about that.

Judging from my experience with optical slaves, I predict a 50% success rate at best.

I am confident that the 0.0005% of the U.S. population afflicted with paparazzi problems will rejoice and marvel at this latest technological advance.

Regardless of all the arguing that ya'll are doing, if this thing had a green or red gel on it, then it'd be a lot more awesome cause then not only would it ruin a photo with a flash, even if the flash overpowered it, it'd still cast a really ugly color on the person, thus still ruining the shot.

Now you all can keep arguin, but I'm gonna go back to ripping this off by figuring out how to stuff a Q flash and Quantum Turbo battery pack into a Dooney and Burke.
