Online Photography Classes? - 07-09-2009, 06:06 PM

I had no clue where to put this thread so I hope this is okay. Anyway, I've been wanting to learn a little more about photography so I was wondering if anyone had taken any online classes and if they were alright or just a waste of your money.( I guess what I really mean is something that isn't a scam!) Maybe you've taken one where you actually get feedback from a teacher? I want to take an actual class, but the only ones I've found are in Houston or Dallas, and with my location and busy schedule as a student I think it would be more realistic to do something at my own pace and from home. I'm not trying to get a degree or become a professional, it's just a hobby and I want to learn more about it. No harm in that right? I've read many books and practiced but reading books is hard for me to understand some times..soI thought this might be a better approach. I've searched this forum (and a few others too) for a while but I really didn't find anything on online classes that I could use. If you have a link of a website with information that would be great too. Thanks!

hi kayla,

a friend of mine compiled a bunch of lessons together on his blog.
http://enhancedforloop.wordpress.com/new-dslr-guide/

if you're more of a do'er than a reader than youtube is the way to go. they practically have information on everything. also, your user manual is a great reference tool to find out what all the cool buttons/functions do.

welcome to the world of digital slr photography. it's going to be expensive :)

Hi Kayla
I applaud your desire to learn more about photography.
I don't have any online courses to recommend, but there are plenty of short lessons, etc. available.
Here's what I teach in my classes.

1-learn about aperture and shutter speed and their relationship to each other.
while you are learning about them, learn how to adjust these on your camera.
2- Learn how to adjust ISO and why you should adjust it.
3- Learn about depth of focus and how to control it.
4- learn about the rules of composition.
5- study the nature of light and shadow and how to control both.

This is just a start, but maybe you can google some of these things and get started.

You can also ask an infinite number of questions on this forum and get some
answers as well.

I haven't used them but I've been told that BetterPhoto.com is good by a Pro Photographer friend.

There's a ton of stuff on the net and then there's always the old fashioned way - read a good book. Scott Kelby and Brian Peterson have some great stuff on understanding aperature and light and composition. As for online stuff, I like:

http://digital-photography-school.com/ by darren rowse is good for basic stuff

http://www.tmelive.com/index.php/pages/index.html by Craig Tanner, a great teacher

http://www.lynda.com/ is a great resource for Photoshop or Elements training. They offer hundreds of online video/webcast training under a subscription plan but there are a lot of free ones to try her out and see if you like her style.

Good luck!
