Project: Razzle Dazzle Miata (lots of pics) - 07-09-2009, 11:30 PM

I was in Albuquerque last weekend. Talked it over with a friend and we decided it was time my little go-kart got some fresh paint!

The infamous "Before" shots.

Done with sanding...

Masking.

Base coats of white.

Masking the design.

Fin.

Anyways...

This is what it was supposed to come out looking like:

More Linkage

I can't find any images right now, but naval rangefinders used a split image. You input information into the system like angle on the bow, course and speed and when you lined up the images, the "computer" would spit out a range and firing solution. If you couldn't line up the images at all, or lined them up improperly, your range would be unreliable. This made surface and torpedo attacks more difficult.

I always thought this type of camouflage was neat because it didn't focus on hiding the subject.

Total cost? Less than $100.

Cornbread...is this one of those stories that should've started out with "large amounts of alcohol"?

You didn't invite any of us to play!
What fun. I thought that you painted it white and then put the black design on it. Part of it still looks like the metal still shows through.??

Now what you need is either a 5 liter mustang engine or a Rotary 13b engine in it.

When you said re-paint, I was sure we wouldn't recognize you. WRONG!

Awesome! BTW, bump up your exposure when metering white cars. +1 or maybe +2.

Mr. & Mrs. Kevin and I are meeting at Glenwood Cemetery Sunday morning if you're interested.

It's getting closer to an art car. Now all you need are zebra ears and a tail.

Rattle canned it?

Reminds me of a high school friend with a VW bug in almost the same condition (60s era car). It needed some new paint, so he went to Sears and bought some exterior latex and brushed/rolled it on.

I grew up with a paint bay in my dad's shop, so I immediately start thinking, oh crap, look at all that freaking DUST!!! You can NOT paint a car in those conditions... then I saw the Krylon spray cans and went.... oh well... guess you can.

I like the concept - that part is cool. I like the way it looks from a distance... it's wicked cool.

But I'm not sure why you've still got metal showing through in some areas - unless you sanded it down smooth, and then didn't prime it before you taped it... which means the tape pulled off some of the paint when you pulled it off maybe?

My guess is no primer/prep and/or wrong paint for metal and the white came off when you pulled the painters tape. Just don't wash it!

But a fun project!! I really like the idea!

Of course you can do it outside of a paintroom. IF you want texture!

When we removed the masking tape, it pulled the spray paint and the original top coat with it. There is primer underneath every spot where the paint came off. That's the strange part.

Poor FD! Might as well sew a pecker onto Milla Jovovich.

Donna I'd have to say from this comment that you probably haven't spoken with Mr. Cornbread at any length. As my question stated, and he answered, many of his stories (and some great comedy) seems to all start with "consumption of alcohol in very large quantities".

This is my first attempt at painting anything. I wasn't really going for a professional quality, I just wanted something to keep my car from rusting. From a distance, it looks good.
