is there steps you have to go through to make this legal or do you just slap one on your image that you took and thats more than enough to keep some one from legally stealing your image?

There are many threads on this topic. Rather than start another one, you would be best served by using the search feature with some key words like: "copyright office", and "register".

If your talking about a watermark... to protect your image from being 'borrowed' from the net... that's one thing.

Like this:

You can do a brush preset in photoshop - so that you just 'stamp' it on your images.

If your talking about actually copyrighting it, i.e. registering it - that's a whole nother can of worms...and it's usually done on the best of your images.

I just usually use the ©.

You type it by holding the alt key, then type 0169, then release the alt.

For copyright information, I suggest the copyright office at http://www.copyright.gov/.

The proper use of copyright markings are defined there under copyright basics. An excerpt is here.

The notice for visually perceptible copies should contain all
the following three elements:
1 The symbol © (the letter C in a circle), or the word
“Copyright,” or the abbreviation “Copr.”; and

2 The year of first publication of the work. In the case of
compilations or derivative works incorporating previously
published material, the year date of first publication of
the compilation or derivative work is sufficient.

3 The name of the owner of copyright in the work, or an
abbreviation by which the name can be recognized, or a
generally known alternative designation of the owner.

Example: © 2008 John Doe

And just so you know, your image is copyrighted the second you click the shutter! Dont let anyone else tell you differently.

When is my work protected?
Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.

Do I have to register with your office to be protected?
No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Copyright Registration.”

You are not that new to the forum -- you have 271 posts.

and if you didn't know about the search function, now you do, which means that you should owe an extra thanks to Scott.

So really -- where's that big Fail????

It's all good -- I just see Scott on here extending his time and energy to answer a lot of questions and provide positive responses across the board. I don't think he intended his response to be terse or corrective, and even added some suggested search phrases. Not like he said "Go look it up your self noob"

Maybe I jumped the gun -- sorry for adding "drama" to your thread
