Ridiculous Question About Aquatic Plants - 07-16-2009, 12:49 AM

I spend a lot of time outside. I love being near water. And over the last few months, I've noticed something I don't recall ever seeing before by these water plants. They look kind of like eggs - a whole bunch of eggs all stuck together. In fact, it really looks like a handful of pink Floam - you know, that kids' toy that's like some kind of slime with little styrofoam pellets in it?

Anyway, I've been finding it all over the stems of water lilies, lily pads, and other aquatic plants, and around the docks and I'm completely perplexed. Because I sometimes act like I'm 6, I poked one with a stick, and it sort of oozed reddish pinkish liquid.

Anybody got a clue about what it is? My boyfriend calls me 'nature girl,' but I have no idea what it is.

Thanks in advance, nature-lovers!

Thank you! Now, I have to ask...did you know that already, or did you Google it? Because if you searched for it, I'd like to know what terms you used. I've looked for probably 2 hours at different times and came up with nothing!

Seriously. I feel a lot better now that I know! :)

My first guess when I saw the images was that these are eggs, probably frog eggs. So, I did a few searches centered around frog eggs, then went to Google images so I could pick out something that looked like your photo. I found a site in which the OP also thought they were frog eggs, but someone on her thread corrected her and IDed them as I told you. I did a Google image search to confirm and found the website that I linked in my reply. It took me a few minutes to do the searches, maybe five minutes.

Well, I appreciate it. I tried different things related to pond eggs, lily pads, water lilies, pink eggs...it never occurred to me to search frog eggs, because I know those stay in water.

I'm a researcher for a non-profit. I sure do feel silly now ;-) Maybe I should contract out some of my research to you! LOL!

Thanks again.

LOL, you're welcome!

I just got lucky this time. I didn't know until I searched that frog eggs have to stay in the water. Someone else made the same mistake, and someone corrected her where I could find it.
