1) not if you can get DSTAR to work for me. Maybe I'll read the manual someday

2) that's a question for your parents

DSTAR is super simple. I can walk you through it if you'd like. What rig are you running?

I can sympathize with the OP. The proof is ultimately in the pudding, and if the photo comes out great, the client shouldn't care who took it or how much it cost. Sadly, though, there are too many people who assign "value" to "price," and are clueless as to the difference.

About fifteen years ago, my wife and I had portraits done of ourselves. Now, I had been freelancing for several years by that point, including doing some portrait work, and I tried to convince her that if she wanted nice portraits done, I could set things up and take the shots, and we'd save money. But get this -- she came across a deal that the local JC Penney's (at the MALL) was having, and was adamant. Well, ultimately I gave in.

So, we get to JCP, and they had a spot cleared in the store for the photographer to set up her camera and backdrop and lighting, plus they had a make-up artist there. I gotta admit, the make-up artist did a bang-up job on my wife, and the photographer knew her stuff. The photos came out great, and they didn't cost us all that much. Frankly, I didn't know how they made any money at it. I talked to the photographer for a bit, and found out that she traveled all over the place, going from one JCP to another, staying for about a week in each store, and she said that she actually did quite well because the store drew in the business. And the portraits were priced reasonably enough that they were often impulse buys.

So, the point I'm getting at is, the setting doesn't determine the quality of the photo, and neither does the price. The photographer does (and the make-up artist certainly helps), and that's really all that should matter.

David,

Glad you have a place to vent. Vent here ALL YOU WANT. We all have been there. Just don't take it out on others around you. We will absorb the blow for them.

It is NOT you. It is the society we have created. We let people get away with this kind of behavior in almost every aspect of society. I am flabbergasted by what people will say in this day and age. They will speak the most insulting and degrading things to try and embarrass you into giving them a lousy price break. In days past you could simply ask for a break. Insulting others was simply something you did not do for any reason.

Where have all the good people gone? I know they are there, they are just harder to find.

You shoot without a lens? How does that work for you?

I thought his images looked a little soft.

Try this one; 20 frames or so into an astrophotography run, (planning to stack the images later) I went to take another dark frame (put the lens cap on and shoot at the same settings, to get an image of just the sensor noise to be subtracted from the stack) only to find that I'd just shot about 20 of them.

Apparently, I'd focused, put the cap on to shoot the first 30 second dark frame, then kept right on going without taking it back off. I'm glad I wasn't doing 30 minute exposures.

Define to me real.
It helps if you don't keep asking if they want fries with that portrait package.

I work for a national chain and I love it . Tell them to go to a real Photographer then , Is what i would of said , I did not make them walk or drive to my location , No one is going to be 100% satisfied , I just try to grow thicker skin ----But i still take it personal id they don't like my shots , I am in a situation where I cannot work for myself right now , Just take everyone else's advise and let it go , We don't have hours to spend with a client , I have 15 minutes per session that's it , I admit some studios are not any good and hire monkeys , But my sales reflect my work , I don't make hourly wages , I work on commission on what i sell , That is what motivates me to do create the best images possible ----My studio travels from location to location , and am requested to go back to certain shoots
I am new to this forum --- I see a little Bias here from Company Photographers , Than from studio owners ----Am I wrong ???????

They're all good people here (on TPF). :) I think there's always been a bias from freelance pro's. We all pay our dues, though. Someday I'd like to be big time, pulling in the major bucks and highly sought after. I mean, isn't that everyone's dream?

I enjoy what I do and who I work with. My crew is top notch. We take a lot of pride in what we do and how we do it.

It persists in all genres of photography. The commercial shooters look down on the photojournalists. The photojournalists look down on the portrait shooters. The wedding photogs look down on anybody who doesn't shoot a wedding. etc, etc, etc... Maybe it's part envy, part, jealousy, part insecurity. I don't really care. Just shoot and let others call you what they want.

I go to some shoots and people treat me like a rock star. I go to others and they treat me like the janitor. I get the same quality shots either way.
