I just have to ask - 07-22-2009, 08:29 PM

how many of you if you were offended by something someone said to someone else or said in general, would you confront the person, contact management if in a public place or would you call the cops?

I ask cause for those of you who "know" me and my kids (or most kids for that matter) know that I am blunt and too the point and that of my 3 kids 2 of them intentionally irritate the piss out of each other just because they can.

Any way we were bowling tonight as we have for the past 10 weeks (the kids were in a league) and the 2 kids started with each other and I told them to shut up. No we don't have a problem telling them to shut up cause hush doesn't work in our house. Any way, they were on their 2 lanes and I was on one next to them bowling cause I needed something to do tonight. I rolled about 6 gutter balls in a row and threw the F bomb ( yeah I know I shouldn't have lol) between my teeth but realized I said it louder than I thought (actually thought I was mumbling to myself so I didn't yell it or anything). But this woman beside of me doesn't go to management, doesn't say anything to me she calls the freaking cops!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF?!?! Management was pissed that she didn't come to them, the cop was like WTF am I here. And told her he couldn't do squat that if management had a problem with me they could ask me to leave but nothing he could do.

So with the back story would you have called the cops? I mean seriously? I actually find it comical and think it is an awesome way to finish off my birthday lol.

LOL....someone hired a Cop to come to your B-Day party....I think that is so cool!!!

I would have leaned over and said something to you....about it....I think the cop thing is so over done...they have enough to do with all the riff-raft out there to come and talk to you about the F-word....he was probably wanting to say that the F-word a few times to the lady but restrained himself.....

A) Happy Birthday!

B) I have three kids. . . the F bomb is a regular occurrence! Usually just mouthed to myself. . . rarely audible.

Nope! Given this story, there is no abuse, no neglect, and no one was in immediate danger. I may, however, keep an eye on you to make sure things stayed that way but I don't bowl. :)

I probably would have eyed you suspiciously for a few seconds if you yelled at your children, and maybe felt irritated for a moment if I noticed you using profanity, but I mostly ignore that sort of thing.

This isn't quite the same thing, but I was working away at work last week, when I overheard some of my co-workers nearby taking a quiz and making a lot of sexually suggestive comments. They had also gotten the new girl involved (this was her first or second day at work). That sort of thing could get someone put on report immediately in my office, so I decided to let the new girl know not to take part in this sort of thing (that entire department was put on report at least once before for something like this). So, the next day, as she walked past my desk, I whispered my warning to her, ending with, "Just because these idiots go over a cliff, don't you follow them." Well, the next day, my department manager pulls me outside to see if I had actually called someone an idiot. I explained the situation, she seemed to accept my explanation. Then, yesterday, when the VP met with me, he brought it up, and sternly told me never to make comments like that about someone. I tried to explain, but he cut me off, so I just nodded my head. I wasn't interested in discussing it.

Richard the funny thing was I didn't yell at them either, I was just trying to get them to calm down as they were too loud, I even walked up to them but hey to each their own right?

As for your situation I would be in trouble cause I can't just sit there and keep my mouth shut lol. If dh were here I would have confronted the lady but I really didn't want to spend a night or 2 in jail until dh could bail me out and then be wondering where the heck my kids would go lol. So I guess there are pros to dh being gone lol, I keep my cool better with stupid people. And if I were asked if I called someone an idiot I would have been like you're damn right I did lol.

It doesn't matter what we would do in this situation. It matters what this lady did and what the police officer did. With that said... I think she went crazy, calling the cops over a curse word. Being impolite isn't a crime. I think baggy pants worn so low that you can see a persons underwear is also impolite. However, it isn't a crime here in Dallas.

I suppose they could've stretched the law and charged you with disturbing the peace, but then you could've stretched the 1st amendment and claimed freedom of speech...

i think calling the cops is ridiculous.

my wife would have said something to you, "most likely in the form of, there are little kids around, can you please watch your language." no cops would be called

me, I don't condone that type of behavior or really appreciate it, but I also feel people should do whatever they want within the confines of the law without me pestering them. I don't have the time to memorize all the laws, so I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt that they are obeying the laws, unless they are posing a threat to me or my family (then I don't bother to get tangled up in the legal crap, I can sort that out later...).

I would have been really offended and felt REALLY bad for your kids. I would have asked management to move my family to a lane far from you and if that wasn't possible I would have taken MY kids and left.

You would have ruined OUR night, but I wouldn't have called the cops since I don't know of any crime you committed.

Calling the cops pretty severe and over-the-top if you ask me. If I wasn't aware you were with your kids(Since they were on different lanes) and heard you telling them to shutup and then cursing, I MIGHT say something to you. At worst, I'd have gone to management. But cops shouldn't be bothered by trivial stuff like that.

And I agree, "hush" doesn't work well in our house either. Shut up, or Can it works a LOT better. Sounds worse, but hey...
And I've let more than one F-bomb slip in front of my kiddos and strangers.

Don't beat yourself up about it. It's the world we live in these days. People are too easily offended and want to wrap everyone in a pretty, protective little bubble of happiness. It's a wonder most of us made it to adulthood really without seatbelts, chewing the lead out of pencils, having our parents be able to backhand us in the grocery store, etc. :)
