Any Recent Mattress Hunters out there? - 07-23-2009, 12:00 PM

So with the house being flooded out a couple of months back, I am in search for a quality mattress set. I have to numerous stores, Sears, MattressFirm, MattressGiant, Gallery Furniture, Roomstore, etc. and have laid on the various beds and have found one that I may get. BUT, it is one of the mattresses that was returned under the 90 day 'trial' period.

A couple of things on my mind....

Has anyone bought a Mattress Firm 'Clearance' mattress, if so, how has it worked out for you?

Has anyone had any experience with the Simmons Beautyrest NXG(Latex) Mattresses, if so, how's it treating you?

Thanks in advance.

Highly recommend the Select Comfort (Air) mattresses. We have had our 10+ years, never a problem. Individually adjustable sides (hers/his), cool in the summer and light enough for one person to move; tucking in fitted sheets is a breeze.

Chiming in because we need a new mattress. The one on it now is a Thomasville pillowtop and kind of a pain! Came as a set with the bed, though.

Absolutely - LOVE - our select comfort. Smartest money we ever spent.

I've slept on a temperpedic bed (hotel) and it was hot...

+1! For a year after breaking my back, my back hurt continually. Within 2 weeks of getting the Select Comfort mattress, the back pain went away. LOVE it!

Love it!

Ken,

Everybody has different taste. My wife and I are on our second mattress in the last year. The first mattress was a soft pillow top. We thought it was great. In just a few months we began to hurt. The pillow tops beat down and we were left with large body impressions.

The mattress we have know, is the mattress we thought was to expensive at first. But with the help of Fingers going out of business we got a great deal.

I found the CC mattress blog. He is definitely a Sealy/Stearns & Foster biased dealer, but if you read his blog a lot of what he says makes sense.

If nothing else it is fun to read his blog.

All - Thanks for the info and recommendations. Keep them coming.

Kevin - Thanks for the link to the blog, informative and well, biased. :) I was looking at the Sealy SpringFree mattresses but multiple sales rep at diff mattress firm advised not to and to look at the Simmons Beautyrest Medalist line.

Why do manufacturers/retailers provide different names to the 'same' mattress?!?!?!?! ugh!

FWIW, We are on a Sealy spring free Beachside. The first thing we noticed is how cool (as in not hot) the bed is.It took a while to get used to. We are thinking about buying a latex topper to make it a little softer.

We wanted that bed before, but backed out because of price. After we bought the mistake, I found the blog.

He is biased but a lot of what he says makes sense.

Macy's has a S&F hotel bed that is a innerspring that I liked.
Just a thought.

my cousin has the select comfort and I can never find a setting that is comfortable for me when I sleep on it.

I, too, am getting a new mattress, but I've got mine picked out. I cant remember what the name is, but I do know it is comfortable and it is a memory foam one. After my back surgery, it takes a while for my back to settle into the bed and the memory foam helps ease the settling.

good luck finding one

Be careful with memory foam. If you move around while you sleep, you may have isssues.

You will sink in and turning becomes much harder.

I found it took a night or 2 to get used to the different feel of the Select Comfort. After that, there was no going back. A night or 2 on a regular mattress brings the backaches back with a vengeance still to this day.

We had had a waveless waterbed for 15+ years previously, for me a regular mattress was out of the question due to that back issue. The waterbed fixed it and I really really wanted a new one when that one got too leaky....

The select comfort has been every bit as therapeutic as the waterbed, without the 3am emergency patches.

One nice thing about the waterbed was that in the winter we could lower the house t-stat since the heater in the waterbed kept us very comfortable. We do miss that.

I wish there was a select temperature bed. Her side can be 80 and my side can be 65.
