He's a crank, even about the moonshot.

BTW, it is a common misconception that re-entry heat is from friction with the air. In reality, the heat is heat of compression. If you pump up a football or a tire quickly, you might notice that the football or tire gets warm. That's because when a gas is compressed, it releases heat, called heat of compression. When a large, flat object that is travelling at 25k mph travels through the atmosphere, it compresses a lot of gas very quickly. This releases a lot of heat. Objects traveling over Mach 5 produce enough heat to melt iron.

"The guys could easily have fried to death."

Just as much as they could easily have sufficated.

They were floating around on their own for an hour until the helicopter made it to them. I'm happy we were able to find them out there, I don't think they had radios, and GPS won't be put into space until the 1970s. For all I know, they probably used LORAN as invented by my dad.
According to Wikipedia, which is never wrong,
Quote:
LORAN was an American development of the British GEE radio navigation system (used during World War II). While GEE had a range of about 400 miles (644 km), early LORAN systems had a range of 1,200 miles (1,930 km). LORAN systems were built during World War II and were used extensively by the US Navy and Royal Navy. The RAF also used LORAN on raids beyond the range of GEE.[2] It was originally known as "LRN" for Loomis radio navigation, after millionaire and physicist Alfred Lee Loomis, who invented LORAN and played a crucial role in military research and development during WWII.

So is Rockwell caught in a lie again?

I wondered what he was talking about. I was trying to imagine how the engineering father with this fantastic accomplishment could handle the disappointment of having a son who is just a photographer.

Well, "photographer" in gigantic air quotes (compressed air quotes).

I don't care about his errors, just that fact that he is hyping up the anniversary of one of our greatest accomplishments needs positive comment.
