Need help from Windows experts - 07-24-2009, 02:03 PM

I need a little help on a wireless network issue on Windows. We wiped my son's hard drive clean and reinstalled Vista, now we are having a conflict with the wireless network connection. It keeps reading the connection twice and doesn't allow the computer to connect to the internet. It works fine from a wired connection.

I did a lot of searching on interwebs and found a solution to the exact problem, followed the steps, but it didn't work. I have disabled and deleted all the connections only to see them both pop up again and cause the same conflict.

Here is a screen capture of what I am seeing on the network and sharing screen.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is there a third party virtual machine application (like VirtualBox) installed? Also, is the correct driver installed for the wireless NIC?

He does have WOW installed on the computer. Would that have a virtual machine app?

Also, he was using the computer before with WOW and the wireless connection. Something has changed since reinstalling Vista.

Thanks!

Since you had to reinstall Vista, have you also installed the updates, especially the Service Packs? I'd do that first, before even trying to get on the 'net.

If you click on "disconnect" on one of them, does it disconnect both? Also, look in device manager and see how many wireless NICs there are installed and what they are.

When you reinstalled Vista - did you give your computer a name?

Right click on Computer and then Properties. Give your computer name, description and workgroup and reboot.

It's stupid - but sometimes that fixes stuff.. it's not 'identifiable'... so it screws stuff up.

Did you install the manufacturer's driver for the mainboard chipset (the one that supports the memory controllers, USB, ethernet, etc.)? That is usually my first step in troubleshooting issues of this kind.

Using the Windows supplied chipset drivers can cause some really strange behavior.

Find the connection that is YOUR router and make it a Private, trusted network connection. When using a Public connection, it limits the connectivity to "protect" your computer.

You can name the connection just as you would your computer, as suggested above.

Upgrade to Windows 7...It really works better.

Or go into control panel, device manager, and hardware. Delete the network adapter.

This should kill all the connections.

download the latest drivers from your MOBO manufactuer. load the latest driver when windows see's the "new device"

This should fix it.

This problem is the same as when windows loads the same drivers for the same device. Your computer has loaded the same network under 2 profiles thus locking out the IP address.

You have to delete the "unknown" profile and reset the known. Most of the time this can only be done buy deleting the wireless adapters and reestablishing the connection. My computer did the same thing and after I would delete and reload the adapter it would be fixed. Just make sure that you don't have the wired connection on. Sometimes they conflict.

Did I mention Win7? it is VVVEEEEERRRY stable and doesn't have the issues that Vista has.

You're lucky. I'm one of those folks who can manage to lock up an OS if it can be. It's not like I try to or anything, it's just that I manage to get myself into situations occasionally that the OS apparently deams "parlous." I've only managed to lock up XP maybe a couple times in all the years I've used it. I've managed to lock up Vista a bunch, since last year. Reminds me of Win98, in fact.

That's my main complaint with Vista. I have Win 7 installed on an older machine, cuz I wanted to see how it would behave on a minimum sort of installation (1.2GHz processor, 768MB ram, old motherboard, old vid card, old sound card). I had a time finding drivers for my peripherals, and finally removed my scsi card from the machine because they just don't exist anymore apparently for scsi. But I finally got it working. This same computer used to run XP and ran it well. Can't compare it directly to Vista, but Win7 runs quite a bit slower, which I suspect is because it wants a lot more than 768mb of ram.

Other than that, I like the Win 7 interface better. It's quite Vista-like, but there are subtle differences, and where I've found them, I approve of them.
