Photo Question - Persmission being asked to use a photo on Flickr - 07-28-2009, 09:46 AM

Ok, so I have a food photo on Flickr and I was contacted by the promotion manager of the restaurant asking permission to use my photo for marketing purposes. I do appreciate the fact that they are asking persmission.

How do you gals and guys handle this kind of situation? Do you just hand it over? I am not a professional photographer so I don't know how to handle this.

Thanks.

You may not be a professional photographer, but your photos are excellent, and I love the food photography you've got. I would certainly not recommend giving the photo away.

If I were asked for permission to use my photo to promote a business, I should send them a contract. The contract probably should include a specification of monetary compensation.

I was asked for a medium-quality, thumbnail image for a San Antonio map company. I retain full rights over the photo, including where and how it was displayed (this is somewhat important). I agreed not to receive monetary compensation, but the photo was credited to me near the photo.

Yea, ask them their intended uses for the image and then base your fee on that. More than likely they're going to want to use it for local advertisement, news papers, free weeklys, local magazines, and then in shop imagery, menu, specials, banners, poster. They will try to get the most out of it. So you have to figure out what that's worth to you.
