Does jelly go bad? - 07-31-2009, 09:12 AM

I need some grape jelly right now, and at work we have a pile of individual sealed packets sitting out at room temperature. They've probably been there for a few months or so. Does anyone know if jelly goes bad

probably not, but you wouldn't get me to eat one to find out......

microscopic holes in the packet?
salmonella in the jelly ?
mold spores ?

Are you feeling OK ?

You are probably OK with the packet stuff. There are so many chemicals in them, they will out live you.

I have opened jars of jelly that are years old. Jelly doesn't easily spoil. I think it doesn't have enough water.

if sealed it is probably ok. as Glen siad, the preservatives will outlive you. usually when it is starting to separate; ie, the sugar crystalyzes, that's when it gets tossed.

I learned that in college. Not in a class, but the medical students often raided our fridge looking for ongoing experiments as proof of evolution....

Packets are made to last for 5+ years.

Does jelly go bad?

I've had bad luck with it when I eat more than a couple of jarfuls a day.

Yeah the stuff is probably just fine since it is stored in unchilled warehouses for months in the distribution chain. Now if a pack is bulging upwards I wouldn't open it.
