That doesn't even look fun. That looks scary as hell.
yeah, I saw 179 on the end of the straight at the downhill end.
That time could probably be better, his driving looked a bit sloppy, he was making some mistakes. I wonder what the ZR1 record is on the 'ring?
I've driven that track many a time on Forza Motorsport (that game makes me a racing expert ) and still haven't gotten it memorized. It's a frustrating track.
Cool vid though.
He hit 175 a few times, before just momentarily touching 179.
I don't know much about racing or high performance driving, but I had the impression that he was a bit sloppy and responding a bit slowly. He seemed to have his hands full and not quite able to keep up.
I know this sounds like just some B.S. but I actually road raced sports cars back in the 70's . Attended several big name (at the time) schools and had my IMSA and SCCA license.
He made a few errors, but who wouldn't ? That track (I've never been there) is so long and so complicated it would take a lot of practice to even be able to accomplish this lap.
The 'street' tires were obviously rated well, but were complaining in every corner ( a good thing ). Race slicks don't squeal. They just grip until they let go and then you have a problem.
It did get my heart going a couple of times when the ZR1 went into a bit of understeer. At the end of the straight, I thought he could have delayed braking a bit. Hard to tell. Does the ZR1 have antilock brakes? Engine sounded strong except when he missed a gear change ( and waved his hand in the air ).

He was actually pretty clean, and VERY quick. There were a few little things here and there, but nothing big, and on a course such as this one, everyone will slip up. This is why "The Ring" is the benchmark for ALL performance cars. When track numbers are compared, this is the course used, and it is because of the complexity of therein. It has pretty much every component possible, and all in one track.
I LOVE the ZR1. If I won the lottery tomorrow, that would be my first automotive purchase, and not just because it is quick. There are so many parts to that car that set it above the rest! Very, VERY respectable car!
I remember watching "Top Gear" when they ran it on the Discovery channel a few years ago, and there was this chick who is like one of the managers of the track, and she was nailing every apex and blind corner perfectly. It was awesome and uh, how do I put this...curiously stirring to say the least...
So Tom, it would probably be easier to ask you what you haven't done...If you grow a beard you could be the next "XX" (Dos Equis) spokesman.

edit: YouTube is my friend...
Shes a BMW Taxi Ring driver. BMW pays her to drive M5s around the Ring all day long for people who want to see a pro do it in a fast car.
Anyone can take a taxi for like 50 or 100 Euro i think. It's completely worth it.
Or you can get your own rental on the Ring for like 15 euro i think. I wish we had something like that in the US. Too much nanny state and litigation.

Probably one of my fave episodes, here she is taking a DIESEL van around the ring.

people can't drive as it is, id hate to see a bunch of people take it to a high speed track lol. at least it would be a way to get rid of all the people that think they can drive.

Its much harder to get a license in Germany as well. There its a privilege, not a right, as it should be, tho americans think other wise.

In regards to the first video of the ZR1, Thats GM's hired gun driver, so he's no schmuck.
The point was to see how well the ZR1 could do off the dealer lot spec.
So it has the crappy run flats, and not some nice street legal rubber.
Slicks were not allowed because thats not street legal nor, off the show room floor.

Ain't that the truth!
Just today, on my way to work, I got stuck behind a couple in a nice, new car... doing 30 in the 50 zone on the frontage road. They had no traffic ahead of them or to the side. I would have gone around them, but I was near my corner.

She's ok. I'd like to think she's from the old neighborhood, where part of my family originated 300+ years ago.

Take off your tin foil hat and cough up some cash. There are plenty of road course tracks around the country that only require you to pass the tech inspection and wear a helmet.
