Edit: I wouldn't advise crossing the bolivar Ferry and going to Crystal Beach. That whole area was wiped out by Hurricane Ike. There's nothing to do there. Yes a permit is required for that area but not the Surfside area I have described here.
Bolivar is coming back better than a lot of people think. Yes, renting a house is a little thin these days, but so is the traffic on the beach. There are gas stations, restaurants, a grocery store, and anything else you could need there again. It's not a hoppin metropolis again but it's on it's way. We have a house in Port Bolivar that's been restored since the storm and I've stayed down there recently. Give it a chance.

There is a man made beach at Moody Gardens with white sand and clear water. Great for kids because it is much safer.

It was cool to see what some of the people caught. One guy had a crab in his cooler that was the size of my head.

This is in Surfside, about 40 miles west of Galveston. Basically you take Seawall Blvd. west until you reach the end of the island at San Luis Pass, keep going until you get to Surfside, go straight through the light (the road turns into Fort Valesco Blvd) past all the houses to the end of the road, "Jetty Park." Look left at the loooong walkway.

First time I walked it was near nightfall and it was windy. Tons of people out there fishing, walking, hanging out. Even on my way back, there were people coming out to fish at night with lights, lanterns and plenty of refreshments.

Are there any RV parks with hook up's down that way?

Yes, one right down the street. Didn't check if there are full hookups, but the whole town is on septic so nobody will get hurt if you dig a hole and stick the drain pipe in there (kidding!).
