Need to vent.....photographer etiquette - 08-05-2009, 11:30 AM

This has happend a couple times but never twice during one session so I thought it prudent to express my irritation..also to make me feel better...haha

During a session do not walk up to a fellow photographer, while the photographer is trying to wrangle a 1yr and get them to look at the camera and start make googoo sounds and talking to the camera right and do it for 3 or more minutes!! Never...never do it!

Secondly..never walk up to said photographer with your adult clients who are easily posed and will not run away and will look at your camera and wait for the spot that said photographer just got to and just sat their 1yr old client at and say "we will just wait for this photographer to move and then I want you to sit right here" and then stand next to said photographer ( I could have touched her) and then proceed to get out your shinny reflector so 1yr bolts straight for it and keep talking loud enough where 1yr old client is totally fixed on said shiny reflector and your LOUD TALKING and laughing...

okay...feel better...please have some respect...

please dont walk up to another photographer during a session and please dont come and "wait in line" for a spot when you are at a 100 acre park...if the spot you want to shoot at is occupied go somewhere else and then come back.....please!

and FYI this happen during one session and it was 2 diffrent photogs...so unprofessional IMO...just saying :)

I think that is rude no matter what you are doing....my last trip I would walk somewhere with my wife...(I'm no pro)...but would start taking pictures of something...and everyone would run over to where I was and push you out of the way...

So I think it does not matter if you are a Pro or not...just have some common sense and courtesy...

This past weekend I was doing a family photo session at the waterwall and there was someone there doing photos and video of a couple, I guess it was engement as they were in wedding attire. Either that or prom, idk.

But they were all in my shots. It was really annoying.

i agree, it is rude. I wouldn't say anything to them though. I'd just keep working like they weren't there. who cares?!

from the other point of view, maybe this person's clients specifically asked for a picture in that specific spot. and maybe they were waiting and shooting elsewhere for a good bit.

but, regardless of what the situation is, nothing you say or do will make me hurry. unless you have some sort of legal authority.

Some people amaze me with their lack of common courtesy, much less their lack of professionalism.

People suck.

That's why I prefer to shoot trees and rocks, preferably in a place where there are no other people around.

Hey Kimberly, just curious, was the photog in question younger? I could see a younger photog not having common courtesy.

So that was you Kimberly ? You were taking all day to shoot that little kid. Just pull the trigger a few times and be gone.

Oh wait, I've never had a session in Houston....... never mind !!

Boy, I feel your pain. Was doing a product shot, wrangling with a toddler and when I finally got the pose I needed in comes the well meaning boss distracting the child. Then more people show up. When I jokingly said "you're kind of killin' me here" they all left. I think feelings were hurt. A no win situation.

In your situation I probably would have been very sarcastic and said said something similar. I know my sister has had to lecture her fellow sports shooters on occasion. Some people are just clueless. Yep, I'm sure it was very annoying.

I might get flamed for this but here goes:

Sometimes the more professional approach is not to be bothered nor affected by it;

If their actions affect our final product, then perhaps we could move to a different location, we are being paid to shoot and part of that is being able to adjust to any situation thrown at us.

I know it is irritating but as a true professional we should know better =)

My husband and I have a quote that we use when we get frustrated with people, in general. For instance, bad drivers...something will happen on the road and I'll look over at him and just say, "How could we forget? It's their world, we're just livin' in it!"

Sorry that this happened to you. Hopefully, they'll learn...one day.

I feel your pain.

My husband does stuff like this - we went to the park and Sarah was sliding down the slide and for like 3 or 4 shots, he steps in FRONT of me taking the photo. Finally I just looked at him, and said - your butt looks great on my viewfinder - but her grin is what I'm after.

I think people 'try' to be helpful... and don't realize they are making it harder... plus - if I'm already frustrated at a stupid little 2 year old who won't DO WHAT I TELL THEM TOO - someone coming along and screwing up an already difficult situation just pushes me THAT much further towards the 'I'm gonna kill someone' stage.

My wife and I have decided to shake our heads and repeat this mantra "Its not about being courteous - its all aboout them". This rudeness is seen in all areas of daily life and it really just increases your own stress level to fume about idiots with poor guidance when they were growing up.
