My wife and I stood at attention as the procession and LCpl Lara passed by us. My body was shaking as I tried desperately to hold back the tears and render a Marine a last salute. I didn't know him, but I have known other service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and way of life and I wanted to pay respect to him and his family. As the limousine with the family drove by I noticed a young man in the back leaning his head against the window. I will always remember the look on his face and his eyes. He was staring out the window with a look of remorse that broke my heart. His eyes are still etched in my memory. They were haunting, mixed with sorrow and staring off into a world that he doesn't understand.
I met an another young Marine that lost both legs in an IED explosion. He was there to pay his respect in a wheelchair to his fellow Marine. He is a courageous young man.
My wife called me Thursday evening on the way home from work crying. She had just received the news that another Marine from San Antonio was killed in action in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, this time we know the father of LCpl Travis Babine. Bill and his son were very close and his dad was extremely proud of him. Please keep his family in your prayers.
