iPhone+GPS: any experience?

I will mention that in Kentucky over my vacation my iPhone app guided me through areas my mothers TomTom did not ;)

that said, the drawback to the iPhone app is that you have to have a signal. With no signal (EDGE or 3G) it cannot give you an accurate location and the maps become useless. this is where a GPS app like the TomTom that uses the satellites would be beneficial or where a stand alone GPS comes in handy. I still own a Garmin GPS unit I bought many many moons ago, but I really don't take it anywhere now.

I thought TomTom on the iPhone was going to be a great answer for me. My old Garmin is having touch screen issues, outdated maps, etc. and I need a new one. (I could update the maps, but would still have issues with use.) But a new device is just more appropriate given the choices here.

i have a 3Gs and love it.

i use the built in map app and it works perfectly for me (and for my gf on her iphone).

i also thought that the gps wasn't -true- gps via satalite. i was under the impression it just uses cell tower triangulation to get your position and might not work in all areas (ie long roap trips to the middle of no where).

TomTom app is now available in the app store for $99. That is software only and there is no price from TomTom yet on what the hardware mount will cost yet.
