How Many actuations do you have? - 08-11-2009, 03:58 PM

Of course many of you have more than one camera, so use your main camera.

How many actuations do you have? About how many do you average in maybe a year? On my last camera I had it for a year and I put maybe 4,000 on it. But my new camera ive only had it for a little over a month and its already got over 1,300 actuations on it. So it seems like im shooting more I guess.

What do you average?

I'm at about 11k on my 40d that I got in January. By the time the season is done I'll probably be in the neighborhood of 17-18k.

Hmmm, Let's see...300 sessions X 35 images, plus 30 weddings X 250 images, X 35 years. Looks like over 15,000 a year. 35 year total would be over a half million.

Each camera has had more for me. A100 was just short of 7K over a year, A700 was just short of 10K after a year, and I think my A900 is approaching 8K since Dec.

Professionally
I have averaged 67,500 exposures over 27 years. I say exposed because for the first twenty years it was film. That is a lot of money for film and processing, about $1 per exposure. My largest year with film was 1999 and that year I exposed just over 80,000 exposures.
Digitally I have averaged 71,200 actuations for the last 8 years.

Personally
For the last 8 years I have taken about 12,000 actuations a year for my own enjoyment and pleasure.

I should reach 2 million in the next year or so. I will have to keep track to know the date.

Did any of your sony's die of shutter failure? Im just concerned of losing my investment. I mean, if the shutter is only rated for 100K actuations, and ive had for a month and already have over 1000 actuations on it, I guess that means that its good for maybe roughly 100 months? Okay, nevermind I guess I really have nothing to worry about, huh.

I guess if I have the camera for 7-8 years then im doing pretty good huh.

I wouldn't worry.

I think I shot 28k photos or so each year for the last 2 or 3 years. I'm going to be down this year, I think. I don't have that much interesting to shoot every day, as I used to have when I worked in Hall Office Park.

Sorry, but I don't know where to find that info on my 5DmkII. Anyone know how to do it? I looked through the menu, but only saw that I had 1100 shots on the current battery with 59% power left on the charge. No overall shutter count.

I think I'm at something like 15k since January on my D300.

I've shot a few roller derby events, as well as many regular shoots, and even family stuff on vacation etc.

A bunch of my wife's coworkers want to go to the roller derby. Could be fun!

So far I've had really good luck buying used camera bodies and not worrying too much about how many shutter actuations they have. No matter how durable a shutter is rated, issues can happen at any time. That's why I've got backup(s) on all my professional jobs. Bonus: I've saved a ton of money by buying used and putting money into lenses and accessories.

I easily shoot 100k a year.

I'm sure someone like Bob Levy would kill us all on this thread.
