Question...
Is it possible to take photos of the metor shower without a $$$ camera?
I only have a Canon XTi, with a couple of sort of fast (f/1.8, f/2.8) lenses.

Sure it is. You would definitely need a tripod though. You don't even need a fast lens to do this either. My plan is to put it on a tripod, compose, f stop around f/5.6 and start out taking long exposures like around 5-15min or so. Just play around and have fun with it.

I'm just thinking the meteorites won't be visible very long, therefore not much light from any one meteorite. The long exposure will allow you to get multiple meteorites, but seems like the aperture will need to be wide open to get each one on the sensor.

ABC13 is saying you should expect to see 1-2 per minute in the city, more if you're further out with less light from the city to ruin your view of the sky.

I'm pretty much out of most city lights. Between Huffman & Dayton.

I have shot one with my old xti a year or two ago, they came out ok, and all i had was my kit 18-55, set at f3.5 to 5.6 depnding on what focal length i was at, i used a wireless remote though, to have 1-10 minute exposures, at one point I forgot I left it running in my front yard, and it was open for almost 40 minutes! got a really cool star trail shot but it was really noisy even at iso 100 because i guess the sensor got too hot? not sure but it still looked cool

Yep, a bust for me too. I only made it til about 2:30, and was very disappointed.
I'm going back to shooting models. They are a lot more reliable.

I stepped outside to let the puppy out of his cage so he could handle his 'business', and that was about 3:00. As he was 'going', I looked up and saw about 4 or 5 within 5 minutes. I wish I could have stayed out longer, but sleep prevailed.
The moon was getting in the way, and I didn't know which direction to look, so I just stared up and saw them either in my peripheral or slightly off-center of direct vision.

Its a 2-night thing? I thought it was a one-shot annual deal?
edit: yeah, I need some new photos of him. Hes kind of lanky and not as cute now, so I'm less motivated to shoot with him.

I sat out in the country from 3 -5...we didn't count, but saw quite a few. The moon was really bright, probably causing us not to see as many. We still saw some pretty cool ones. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
