8 Days - 1 Hour - 55 Minutes - 11 Seconds From Right NOW... - 08-12-2009, 02:56 PM

So...

I have been in my current department (work) for somewhere in the range of 6+ years. I have gone from being the new guy, to the 2nd most senior, and one of the top dogs for what we do. I handle multiple projects for my team, while performing my normal job duties. I am a SME (Subject Matter Expert) in numerous/most areas within the scope of our support, specializing in modems/internet/routing/networking/fiber/ect. Within this department, I have gone from being a Commercial Tech Support Rep, to a Sr. Tech, to Tech Level 3, and now to Fiber Specialist (actually, my current title includes all of those somehow lol). In January of 08, we transitioned into a regional department that supports all of Texas. Before that, we were 7 guys who supported Austin and Waco, so it was a big change. We (our group) have brought this team from 7 people, to well over 40, and we have had a HUGE hand in forming processes (even for other departments across the region), procedures, a large knowledge base, and a very intricate communication structure. Basically, our role in the scope of our regional operations, is very important, and that not only feels nice (w00t!), but makes for incredible job security. My point in all that babble, is that I am in an unique position that I have worked very hard to reach, and leaving that position would be very hard. Well, I am.

Yesterday afternoon, I excepted a position with our Regional Corporate I.T. Team. It's a big change, and I'll be the new guy at the bottom of the pile again, but sometimes that's just what you need. I had a nice, long talk with my boss before he gave his recommendation (which he said took an hour and a half), and we are in agreement. While I don't want to leave at all, I am very comfortable where I am, and that does NOT promote personal or professional growth. To push myself, I need to step outside of my comfort zone, and that is exactly what I am doing. To say the least, I am excited!

My last day in my current roll is August 20th, so... see title for the countdown... lol

Dylan, you sound like a level headed person and will do well in whatever you do with an attitude like that.
Good luck...

Well at least someone's getting promoted. We were just told that we aren't getting ANY kind of raise for the second year in a row, and in fact we will have four mandatory furlow days next year WITHOUT PAY.

Congrats! But according to your subject, time is standing still, I'd rather have time standing still on the weekend and not hump day! ;)

Man, I am sorry to hear that. But, glass half full, I'd rather loose 4 days pay than my job altogether. If they have to dock me a few days to afford to keep my position in place, I can roll with that. If you every come to Austin and are looking for a job, let me know and we can se what positions are open with my company. At the least, I know basically EVERYONE that can help me progress with this company (part of a backup plan lol), so I have my fingers in LOTS of pots! lol :)

hahahahahaha, and thanks! That timing was until 5:01pm on thursday August 20th, which is when I roll over to IT (in theory). My Start date is actually August 21st, but I am looking at it as me being out of this department when I log out off the phone that day before... :)

Congratulations on the new job.

Yes, it is hard when you can't find work. I've been out for over 19 months now. Even with a Master's degree I can't seem to find someone that needs my skills.

I was a systems engineer with Lockheed Martin but without an engineering degree nobody will recognize my years of experience. I have been a manager of 85 people, a software and hardware quality engineer, and many more titles.

Man, that's rough! Too bad you aren't in Austin. I could at least get a foot in the door if we had something open for that area...
